I had my car serviced the other day at a main dealer and they advised me that my nearside rear tyre was wearing on the inside (uneven wear) and that I could book it to check the alignment of the suspension (£200) to see if that is causing it.

If I was to have them check my suspension and it does need adjusting would I then need to replace the rear tyres because of the change in camber?

I know that Bmw apply some negative camber on the rear at stock settings to improve cornering and I thought that would cause the inside of the tyre to wear faster than the outside anyway (on both rears obviously), I have read about people having the camber dialled out to improve the eveness of their tyre wear especially people who just sit on a motorway for thousands of miles a year.

Do the tyres not wear too badly on the inside when the suspension is at stock and set up correctly?

I don't see why not. I know its too far away, but there is a place in Edinburgh who deal with all Aston Martins cars and the Lotus garage down the road and they only charge around £55-60 when I took the mx5 there.

I doubt anyone is going to do complete allignment on an E92 for 75 quid. My local place is very reasonable yet its still £100+ for my car.

Would I need to change the rears after having this done as it will cost me a fortune?

if i remember, it was about £75 from my local place after the voucher from www.alignmycar.co.uk

allthough that was on the vectra which doesnt have adjustable camber (i think?) or one of the other things they can adjust but cant.

So less work to do.

But still wont be £200.

Probably will need to change the tyres as well to make sense. The 5 had full adjustable suspension as well.

Great but thats for an MX5 and the OP doesnt have an MX5

The price differs based on what car you have as some cars are easier to adjust than others, some have more available adjustments, etc.

Justcarclinic (debateable if they are any good) charge that much.

I got a mondeo done for £35 for checking and £7.50 per adjustement.

Both my rears still have plenty of tread on them, I don't really want to spend £600+ on 2 new tyres when the others still have life in them.

If I have to change the tyres I might as well leave the alignment until the tyres are worn to the legal limit then have it done.

I can't imagine why you'd change the tyres if they aren't worn out?

Isn't your car lowered?

A-line in Dudley are good, and yes they will do a full alignment for 75. There is nothing special about a BMW's suspension compared to another car.

I love the attitude where owners of a more expensive car automatically expect to pay more to have work done on it. Garages must love it :D

I'll be happy to be corrected, but IIRC the MX5 suspension is just about as adjustable as it gets compared to other regular cars. (front and rear camber, castor, toe angle etc)

Yes but there can still be noticable differences that soon bump the price up.

For example take tracking, the front and rears can be adjusted on my civic, yet on a standard hatch it's usually just the fronts that can be set up. Obvoiusly it costs more if they need to adjust front and back. And then there's camber, if that can be adjusted aswell then that will cost more. No one will charge the same to set up a standard run of the mill car than they would to set up something with decent suspension that can be fully adjusted.

This is true, have seen my mum's MX-5 adjustment details and there are loads of adjustment options for camber, tracking etc. Can't really see any car having many more :p

Get down to Chemix in Halesowen, Ive only heard good things about them from owners of many a complex car enthusiasts.

Well no, just the devestatingly simple logic that the more adjustment required and, crucially, the longer it takes, the more you will pay.

Yes but he charges the same for just about any car.
