BMW engine with slight rattle at idle

180(?)k on the box is pretty good going to be fair.... must be 'expected' to a point?

The box has 80k on it not 100k. It's already gone once.

But then I'm always exagerating things when I talk about BMW reliability in threads right ;)

Suprised the diff hasn't started to rip itself clear of the floor...

Olly had to replace the diff last year IIRC.

So, a smidgen more news!

Firstly, I have located a transmission specialist that comes with several independent recommendations. I will probably take it to him rather than a BMW specialist, as this is almost certainly a transmission-area fault and it is a generic transmission. He will probably have more familiarity with the complexities of my or similar transmissions than a BMW specialist would. It's not really a typical wear-and-tear fault, so I have the feeling a BMW specialist would probably have to refer it if they are not experienced at dismantling and repairing automatic transmission systems.

Secondly, I am continuing to drive it. It's quite odd as it drives just like it ever did (except if you nail it - there's some detectable slipping going on at high RPM), but when you come to a stop the dreaded rattle starts. Slipping it in N and applying a touch of throttle brings silence, but when you re-engage D it is very loud for the first few moments! I have just driven 60 pain-free miles in it, and will be doing approximately another 100 miles before the day is out. Cross your fingers I don't get stranded!

BMW probably just remove it, put it in a box and send it to the transmission specialist you are going directly to!

I know thats certainly the case for some of the main dealers up here!

Update!

I drove it a bunch last night, as I mentioned I would in a previous post. In traffic it is really quite a problem. It sounds loud from the inside - open the door and it's like a JCB. Driving slowly in traffic seems to stress it out, too, as it gets much worse.

This morning for the first few miles of my journey it was quite bad, but then after a 5-10 seconds burst of kickdown about 10 minutes in, it seemed to tighten up and was virtually silent for the following ~50 miles. Slow down and go in to town, and it gets worse again. It certainly seems to respond well to a bit of hard acceleration followed by a gentle cruise at ~80-90.

I am hopefully not at work tomorrow and will be able to drop it in to a specialist for a diagnosis and cost estimate. I am preparing for four figures, so hope to be pleasantly surprised!

Re: my purchases at Westfield - none. I didn't get there until just after 7, and then had to wait until 7:30 for David. A brief wander around and 30 minutes at the champagne bar and the stores had closed. I saw a nice coat in Dior, but it was £1200. I think I'll see how much the car costs to repair, first!

Hmm, not really. It's still such an ideal car, but this has just reminded me it's old and prone to failure. If I replace the torque converter, it's really only the transmission itself and the engine that can throw up big bills. However, the transmission has done ~100k, and the engine 184k - am I stringing the car along past its sell by date? Maybe. Especially maybe as I drive a lot, not in the most sympathetic of manners, and those facts aren't going to change any time soon.

If I were to decide to change, I have the problem of deciding what. I want something faster, more comfortable, better built, newer, more technology and more economical. They, unfortunately, lead to a large price tag, and I don't want to shell out tens of thousands on a car right now. A car that I am considering a bit is an E60 535d. However, that puts my total car ownership cost up to around £1000 pcm, from around £750 pcm with the 530i. Decisions, decisions!
