BMW engine with slight rattle at idle

I guess you'd end up getting an AUC, so you'd stand a chance at a reasonable part ex at a dealer...

remaped 535d... right? (That would be epic, and suit your driving imo)

If I were to decide to change, I have the problem of deciding what. I want something faster, more comfortable, better built, newer, more technology and more economical. They, unfortunately, lead to a large price tag, and I don't want to shell out tens of thousands on a car right now. A car that I am considering a bit is an E60 535d. However, that puts my total car ownership cost up to around £1000 pcm, from around £750 pcm with the 530i. Decisions, decisions!

Go to the next class up, a 730d would be ideal would it not? :) They still drive nearly like a 5-series, sort of inbetween a proper luxobarge and a sports saloon as you currently have.

Just had a peek on pistonheads at e60's ... would you be wanting a saloon again or a tourer?

I'd imagine if your still likely to be trundling off to Switzerland having a tourer could be quite useful when you come back with 6 grands worth of cigars and booze....

Tempting, but it's 34/35 MPG and that's just rubbish if I'm going to suffer a diesel. It's a £100 pcm saving on fuel vs. the 530i, yet I get the benefits of running costs and depreciation, worse performance etc.

EDIT: Actually, on reflection, the economy isn't all that important. 35 MPG is a £100 pcm saving, 40 MPG £150 PCM and 50 MPG £200 pcm. Nothing I want will do 50 MPG, and 35 vs 40 is only £50 pcm.

Nah, not quite old and boring enough for a Touring :p

Regardless, they certainly appear to be capable machines. Reading up about DMS remapped ones they appear to be hillariously fast...

Edit - http://www.bmw.co.uk/bmwuk/auc/car_details/0,,1260_159980106__,00.html?currentCh=WBANX92050CZ07678 Just down the road

Granted its a Supra forum, but from an owner with one who clearly likes a hoon...

"I've got a DMS remapped 535d - 344bhp and 560lb/ft - It's laugh out loud quick. I mean seriously.

I've out dragged the 5ltr V8 M5 up the A1, been neck a neck with an RS4 up the M58 and lost out to the V10 M5 from 80-140 leptons by about 2 car lengths.

I use it every day for work. Takes about 85 quid to fill at the current prices (120.9/ltr) and returns around 34.8mpg, equating to 550 miles to a tank."

Maybe take those 'races' with a pinch of salt, but driving hard it looks like he gets a decent average MPG

that doesnt sound like an exhaust bracket if its related to engine speed and goes down with engine acceleration :/
That's kind of why I've spent the last several posts describing it as a problem with the torque converter and/or connecting plates :p

Yup, they are plenty quick, and return half-decent MPG.

was more pointing out that i agreed with that diagnosis, as earlier we'd all been guessing at Exhaust bracket / heat shield vibrations.

Re: my purchases at Westfield - none. I didn't get there until just after 7, and then had to wait until 7:30 for David. A brief wander around and 30 minutes at the champagne bar and the stores had closed. I saw a nice coat in Dior, but it was £1200. I think I'll see how much the car costs to repair, first!

<3 shopping in London.

Update!

So, last Monday I picked the car up from the repair shop. The culprit was the drive plate i.e. part #4 here: http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=DT62&mospid=47546&btnr=11_2878&hg=11&fg=20.

The plate should be held on by three bolts. Two of the corners had snapped off and the one that was left had a big crack through it. The transmission place couldn't believe I had driven it 600 miles as per normal - they were worried just driving it carefully around the block!

Unfortunately all the flailing bits and pieces had damaged the nose of the torque converter i.e. the little knob poking out of the torque converter in the transmission here: http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?model=DT62&mospid=47546&btnr=24_0829&hg=24&fg=05.

Solution was to remove transmission, send torque converter away to be repaired (including internal recondition) and replace the drive plate. Cost of materials was £291.86, cost of labour was £323.12, bringing the total cost to £614.98.

The result is that the noise is now gone and the car drives better than before. The damage was much less than I expected and so I'm pretty happy :)

Nice one. Any idea how long it had been on the way out ?

Still planning on using the train for a while ?
Probably quite some time. It has been running on one bolt since the crazy noise started, but there's a slight vibration that has gone that was only ever there at 6000 RPM or more, and I presume that was the result of two rather than three bolts. That vibration has been there for probably 20k or more, but it was very slight.

Yup, still planning on using the train. Cutting my commuting costs from £700 to £300 per month is just something I can't ignore - I will start in the new year, as there's so few working days left before then that I won't save more than £100, and £100 isn't worth losing driving for :p
