BMW - Oil Service Δ Inspection 1 Δ Inspection 2

Just checked and yup, Microfilters no longer on the list in the E60 LCI.

Also it's showing 38.7mpg  Perhaps the bonkers mpg claims BMW make for the newer Efficient Dynamics 3 litre engine are true? I'm about to drive it 150 miles on a trip I usually get 28-31mpg on with my 530i. Be interesting to see how this copes..

Wow, 38.7mpg is far closer to the official figures than i expected! Was this done on a motorway or mixture of roads? If it was purely done on the motorway, it isn't that unexpected, but still v good.

My world has been turned around... Fox was wrong about a BMW!! It's not 2012 yet is it?! :p

I didn't know BMW had switched to CBS... mainly due to the fact I'd never heard of CBS before this thread :o I must say it does sound better than the regular 14k service intervals. How about on the performance variants? Are these all standard CBS or do they have any additional servicing requirements?

Surely there is even more justification for CBS on performance models than your run of the mill petrol/diesel.

As the car decides when it needs a service, if you hammer a performance model its going to bring up the service light quicker. Much better than waiting to an obligatory amount of miles.

Yeah that was my thinking too, hence the question is there anything additional to the M car servicing? Although I can't find anything on Google, perhaps they have different thresholds for the sensors and I would assume a few more specific ones.

I made it pretty clear I wasn't certain
I know, was just messing with you ;)

Good job I came in and mentioned it then. :p

M cars arent any different as far as i can remember (apart from the running in service at 1200 miles)

the 320si get its spark plugs changed more often (might be every oil service, cant remember)

oil service - oil, oil filter, microfilter reset the light and stamp the book

insp 1 is everything in the oil service plus tyre pressures, check brakes, tyres, suspension, lights etc connect car to the machine and get a print out and a quick run around the block

insp2 is everything in the insp1 plus air filter and fuel filter (presuming you have a 3.0d)

the air filter and fuel filter (or spark plugs if petrol) is changed every 3rd oil service on most CBS cars, some cars have a seperate counter for the air filter, fuel filter/spark plugs though

and a vehicle check is just what it says, no parts are ever changed during this
But these checks, if they reveal any work that need doing, will generate work for them anyway so why charge at this point? In fact, lots of places give free multi-point checks for this purpose and if the BMW forums are to be believed ( ? ) then BMW will offer a free 'health check' themselves.

if being the key word - often they wont reveal any further work, and even if the do there is nothing stopping you take it else where to get the work carried out. why should you get this labour for free?

its not kwickfit where they just want you in the door so they can tell you that you need 4 tyres, discs and pads all round and a new exhaust

a health check is just a quick visual check, the checks on the insp1/2 are a lot more further

Mostly A roads.

Just got back. 155 miles Southampton to Plymouth, mostly A31/A35. In the 530i with this sort of pre-Ringwood traffic and empty roads past Dorchester I'd get 30-31mpg.

In the 525i, loaded with people + luggage..

I honestly think if it was just me in the car it'd have cracked 40.

Absolutely incredible - seems that BMW's economy figures for the new 3 litre petrol engine are not quite as optimistic as those for the diesel. For context, exactly the same trim in a non-loaded 320d yeilded 51mpg.

I reckon this engine is good for 45mpg on a 70mph long distance Motorway cruise, if it can do 38mpg when loaded over A roads and in traffic.

I managed 44mpg out of my E90 330i (the 258bhp version). That was from Birmingham to Leeds in heavy traffic, so some 10mph crawling, mainly 50-60mph, odd burst of 80mph.

I don't think my old 2.0 focus would have done that well.
