This. I'm always confused when people say they are confused by it. It's not been a match to engine CC since the majority of OcUK members have been driving, and many have been alive!

Same bore != same displacement.

The 525i has a different crank and rods with a shorter stroke but the same bore, and a different diff ratio but the same gearbox. Makes for cheap production and development.

The 520i has a smaller bore otherwise it would so oversquare they'd never get close to the character they wanted.

Now though it seems they've gone the whole hog if the 318i and 320i are both a 2 litre.
