BMW question

Nah, they've been doing it for a while. Two examples that spring to mind

e28 525e - 2.7
e21 and e30 316 - 1.8.

So they've been confusing people with badges for the best part of 30 years!
This. I'm always confused when people say they are confused by it. It's not been a match to engine CC since the majority of OcUK members have been driving, and many have been alive! :p

They also did a 1.8litre 318i from 1999-2001~ just to confuse everyone even further!

525i you mean?
Yes, I mean 530i and 525i.

The 525 is a 3 litre?
Not in the e39 I don't think - Not sure wtf he's on about tbh.

Same bore != same displacement.

The 525i has a different crank and rods with a shorter stroke but the same bore, and a different diff ratio but the same gearbox. Makes for cheap production and development.

The 520i has a smaller bore otherwise it would so oversquare they'd never get close to the character they wanted.

Now though it seems they've gone the whole hog if the 318i and 320i are both a 2 litre.
