[Book spec] Something like Flowers for Algernon

I'm secretly trying to indoctrinate my other half into the world of sci-fi. She recently read Flowers for Algernon and loved it, so I'm trying to think of similar things that she might enjoy.

So something similar to Flowers for Algernon, thinky, perhaps philosophical and interesting. No space-ships or aliens!

The nearest is probably "Speed of Dark" by Elizabeth Moon. Similar idea: surgery to "cure" a mental problem - in this case, Autism - and whether the main character should have it or not, given that it will completely change who they are.
