yeah name change is £90 per flight
i may well go alone, but its his £500, he can now barley afford his wedding, i would have to soak that hit up for a few months
Why not get soeone else in and say they can have the tickets for say £400, take the fee out of it and then give the rest to your mate, he's still down some cash but you still get to go and at least he's not the full £500 out.
Go on holiday with your friend anyway, tell him he can pay you back whenever/if ever he is able.
Like you say, he's been your best friend for 18 years and he's fallen on hard times. Give him a break.
im still prepared to go with or without him, i have travelled europe many loan wolf. its his share of the £500, i have even offered to pay or leave it for him to pay in drips and draps, but its more the 1 - 2k we will spend in the 10days with car hire and motels/food and shed loads of booze
best option. ive done this before. sld my ticket cheap so atleast i can something back
I think i will just have to get tough and say im going, let me have what you owe me when you can. Its a sticky situation as i was very excited about us brokebacking it up, we did it in 2005 and was a blast then, since that time i have gotten married and now he is, im gutted but i may as well go and let him sort out what he wants to do with his half. I don't need the money but can't afford to write it off if you know what i mean

yeah basically he has no spare cash. He will pay me back the £500, but that leaves me with an issues, go on my own... or the simplest would be to get out of the whole thing.

Going on a holiday with a mate seems a little irresponsible for a guy who's struggling for cash and already basing his wedding costs on the prospect of a bonus.
I hope he doesn't also have kids.

Not entirely useful, but was the axing of his bonus legitimate? I know you said something about small print, but this can be a very complex dispute. For example, somebody I know had their bonus axed when their company performed badly, despite the department he managed recording supernormal profits. The firm's interpretation of small print was deemed unlawful and he won a boatload of money in the ruling.

Right all sorted! spoke to BA and there was simple no way out (fair enough)

no, his mate is paying him for his ticket next year, and they're going to be doing the trip but on a lower budget than expected.....
If you want to make the trip more "authentic", doing it on a shoestring is the best way to go. Where are you planning on going from Atlanta? Staying in Georgia?

the plan was to road trip in a loop, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi Georgia, if time was going well we would squeeze Louisiana in.

easy on the high horse. the picture you have in your head is wrong. My friend has been a good friend to me, he earns a good wage and has organised a wedding and moved to London in the last few weeks. He was *told* by his boss what his bonus would be as were the rest of there team, no reason to doubt. However current climate they back tracked, someone even walked out over it... He's not borrowing from me, im waving his ticket price until next year, no doubt he will pay me back before then, but the guy is stressed enough.

That's still borrowing. If he has to pay you back it's a debt. And even if he doesn't it's still an irresponsible thing to do.
How on earth is he planning on managing household finances if shortly before his own wedding he's borrowing money to go on holiday with a mate?
I feel sorry for his future wife.

flippin heck, calm down mate, you're reading a forum on the internet! we are going because we have no option... if you read the thread, his bonus fell through and the responsible thing to do was cancel. However we have found out that is not an option. so we are going to go and make the most of it on a budget. He has covered the wedding but is running low on cash. I suggested he should pay me the money next year for the ticket, and to be honest i might write it off as a wedding present.
