Borderlands 2 PhysX can be forced to run on the CPU

So with a allot of AMD owners seeking ways to enable the better Physx effects does this mean that this title is a good Physx title one to actually lift Physx up from the 'meh' type of add-on to a 'worth it' category?

Yeah, like has been said above it really adds a lot to this game instead of a few waving cloths like batman and mirrors edge lol.

The amount of stuff flying round the screen is unreal (especially on 4 player coop) :cool:

Very happy I went with the msi 660ti :)

And could be done using Direct Compute or on CPU like Just Cause 2.

Not really - afaik theres no mature, stable physics library for Direct Compute and most of the effects are beyond what you can do with basic geometry shaders and while the more basic particle effects and rigid body physics can be done on the CPU fast enough once you start increasing the number of them active at one time and start using fluid dynamics like Borderlands 2 does you quickly push beyond what the CPU can currently handle.

I have to admit, I am surprised with the amount of physx effects going on. It has always been a "meh" point for me but imo this will keep me with Nvidia for another generation. The amount of crap that ends up flying around & going all over the ground in some of the bigger battles is amazing!

I said it "could" be done using compute power of both brands, not that it has. Althought most of it apart from maybe complex dynamic fluids has been done on CPU.

And does all this "crap" flying around affect gameplay in any way?

These comments alawys amuse me, do you crank the visuals to max when gaming?

PhysX effects adds to these visuals. It does question why you have the need for the crossfire setup when you are not intereted in visuals but only gameplay. It is almost like you are against it as you can not use it.

Do you by chance like to run your games at a high resolution with lots a detail and AA and Anisotropic filtering?

All of those things just make the game look better, so why can't these effects be viewed in the same fashion.

damn beaten by the above :p

If it was done on both brands of cards instead of just Nvidia, we would have great visuals with physics that affect gameplay too. Say a ramped up BF3 for example.

I'm not against eye candy (even though I'm nearly blind LOL) but its not really physics is it.

Can someone link to a site giving a tutorial of how to enable physX on my ATI card. I've tried to google but come up with strange results.

Thanks

If PhysX option is grayed out on your system, you still can change the settings using "PhysXLevel" parameter in "WillowEngine.ini" file:
(\Documents\My Games\Borderlands 2\WillowGame\Config)

PhysXLevel=0 - PhysX Low
PhysXLevel=1 - PhysX Medium
PhysXLevel=2 - PhysX High

screen image is fine, i notice no slowing down at all in big fights, i've adjusted mine to 8x only rather than 16x.

i've noticed no PhysX, it looks exactly the same as the 1st game, it just has a far greater contrast range and brighter colours!

as for the game itself, well that i'll have to post on the gaming section, but i'm not happy with it !

THe majority of effects don't require physx, the elemental effects are simply missing without physx and replaced with physx, the non physx ones are significantly worse than they were in a previous game and significantly lacking to hundreds of games that don't have physx at all.

Some of the stuff, like if you stand shooting at walls and get lots of random bits of debrie, is something most games don't do.

Physx vs non is very different in Borderlands 2, but what could be done without physx, which is the vast majority of things that don't include standing around trying to create debrie, vs what requires physx, is a better comparison.

IE what they've taken out of a "normal" game and added with physx has a much great overall effect to the game than the few things like bits of wall sitting on the ground... you won't notice or care or look at those pieces while playing while effects from guns would be noticed.

This is why I hate physx/Nvidia, if they merely enabled the things that need physx for Nvidia and disabled it for AMD, there would be very very little missing for AMD users.

Its a case of remove 5/10 standard effects, then add them back in under physx with one extra thing, the extra thing is almost worthless, the 5 make a huge difference, but could and should be there without physx to start with.

Puff of smoke and bits falling from walls is only achievable under physx, rubbish, the walls don't look fantastic after this, the lasting effect being the crap on the ground and it reacting to the quite hilariously non existent feet maybe does need a lot of power, but its the most pointless addition.

Some of the physx effects are also patently awful, some of the water flowing effects in one level are terrible, kill framerate yet aren't at all realistic, and that winds me up badly. We were "sold" on physx giving you vastly more realistic physics at the expense of power, when you get something that isn't realistic yet still uses loads more power.... its a joke.

the thing is, it's definitely a cartoon game and even more so than the 1st game, this 2nd game is much more childish than the 1st...so does PhysX matter ..... no not really !

you're not supposed to look closely at the screen image anyway, because everything you see looks totally wrong, it's a Mickey Mouse cartoon, if you accept this you'll be ok !

i.e the ICE/SNOW looks just awfall, it's the worst graphics i've ever seen...easily, but i try not to look, maybe i've been playing Crysis 2 too much recently, but B2 is poor compared to Bulletstorm as well!

Borderlands 2 has one massive advantage over these other technically superior games, it's much much longer and thus far better value for money.

wrong thread i know, but i feel a bit let down right now

Borderlands 2 isn't that long actually. It's completable fairly quickly. The fallout games are much better if you want longevity.

I'm wondering how people would feel if Intel put money into games and made the developers take out certain features that an AMD CPU could do.
