Boring Alert: Newcar with pics... Diseasal!

One of my sisters has one of those - she bought it new back in '05 !

You know its history (been in your own family if I read right), its cheap.

Result.

Yup been in family since new. Was an ex-display model from Theale Motor Works Renault Dealership, purchased directly from them. Total cost to me was 2k.

So technically, I am the third owner.

Its not the end of the world, I have my monkey bike to tinker with, and a 1972 MGBGT to get ready for driving to Spa next year to watch the F1 :D

This is a stop-gap that fills a hole in my car ownership for now!

It was only cheap because he got it off his parents.
Why are you focusing on that? It got it cheap, thats a good thing as far as I am concerned. The fact I know it's history is a plus.

I'm focusing on that because half the thread seems to be under the impression that you can buy 5 year old Megane diesels for 1500 quid.

The best thing to do with this car is to sell it on, immediatly, for considerably more than you paid for it. That way you get some profit adn can buy a decent car. If you keep it then it will slowly bleed you dry with constant and irriating failures and bore you to death with its woefully underpowered, noisy and horrible engine.

That might give his parents the hump though.

If he keeps it, its like recieving a poison chalice as a gift. His parents know how bad these things are given they've shelled out for an engine, gearbox and a turbo on it!

Yea but still, it would give me the hump.

In theory it might run ok now then too :)

Bargain. You'll get rid very soon, but bargain nonetheless.

Although I'd probably just drive a dented Prelude :p

Well, I have soldiered on with this motor.

14000 miles
19 fillups
~£1,450 in diesel later:

1x Brake Caliper failed (replaced rear discs/pads+faulty caliper)
1x Major Service

Cost £550 total

3 x headlight bulbs?!

Cost £40 (bought 4 and have 1 spare left!)

1x MOT
1x rear bulb

Cost £40

Current milage is now 81303.
I am averaging 750 miles per tank, and a fill-up is usually 57ish litres to fill.
So, this is about 60mpg.

The OBC, however, will regulary tell me that I have managed as much as 72mpg over the tank?! I think it needs some sort of re-calibration? Any ideas?

So, it works out as costing me around 2.1k total for 14k miles and 6 months :)

My Prelude on fuel costs alone would have been ~ £2,850.00 So, given conservative maintenance costs of £150, lets call this £3000 for the same timeframe.

So, seeing as I had a 1500quid cheque from the prelude, and it cost me 2k, i put up 500 quid, which I have covered. So I suppose I am ~£500 better off that before I purchased it?

And you haven't started cutting your arms yet?

Purchase of win. That is if you don't want an interesting, or particularly good car.

Checks....

No, my arms are still attached :)

I am starting to realise how a boring but reliable car is actually very usefull! Sure its not going to set the world on fire in terms of performance, and its never going to impress anyone, but why should I care? Sure, I miss having a spirited drive every now and again. I mentioned this to my GF, and said that it would be nice to have a little MX5 or similar for weekends. She then suggested we sell her motor and buy one :D

Could work out well!

1.6 derv. surely every journey is taking you twice as long to complete now that you have NO BHP

I tend to plan for triple time journies now, sometimes I do get a tailwind though and that speeds it up a bit!!

Well, Its had a 4 failures, 3 of which are light bulbs (which are nothing more than mildly annoying) and the 4th was the caliper. Not really willing to write it off just yet :)

I remember having that exact same conversation... and we ended up with a Grande Punto :(

Still, if it keeps falling apart at the rate that it has in the last 6 months we won't have it come this time next year
