Boring Alert: Newcar with pics... Diseasal!

Hardly a serious comment on my part, hence the smiley.....

I don't know if failure as complete as the OP's is common or not on this car, I'd be surprised if it was that common....

As ever in internet land, because we hear of issues with certain cars, often we assume all such cars are prone to such issues, in reality, I'd wager the majority have few major issues.

Interesting to see if somebody knows better - I cba to google a Renault! :D

Having owned French cars in the past I will avoid them at all costs. That's not to say all French cars are unreliable....

Ah yes, Megane Diesels. I remember being told that if I bought one it would instantly explode (or at least all electrics would die and i'd be left with it costing me thousands and thousands to get out of a lay by somewhere), I was also told that it would be uncomfortable and that I would hate driving it.

I ignored everyone (Fox included as I remember him telling me I was an idiot), bought an 06 1.9 DCi 130 in late 2008 for £3500 with 78k on the clock. Just had it valued for trade in at... £3500.

In the time I have owned it, the following things have gone wrong: nothing.

I have the following to say about driving it: For a mid sized non sporty hatch it goes very well, rides nice and softly on the motorway (though in turn this does mean its a little skippy going round corners if you push it, but its a diesel Megane, not a sports hatch!!) its very easy to drive with all controls being light and precise.

Sorry to say, I'm very glad I ignored everyone, it's been very good value for money and I'm only looking at changing now cos I want to go back to a larger wheelbase car for even better motorway cruising and because I fancy a change.

My last service was done with Renault as they were cheaper than my local independents at £99 for the whole thing. They gave me a courtesy car, everything was very pleasant and they washed and hoovered it all for me. I have never even been tempted to use a dealer in the past, none of my cars have been new enough, but in this case it made more sense and honestly, I would recommend any other Renault owners to consider doing the same, they have really improved their dealer network!

For £1500, with full knowledge of its history, that's a very good VFM car! Though I can imagine the 80bhp 1.5 might be a bit underpowered with the larger tourer body?

Clearly, a Renault is not a BMW, they are built to a budget and it does show. But that does not mean that, at least for the last few years, they have not been producing some good middle of the road cars that tick the boxes of your less enthusiastic driver who wants an A-B vehicle with a few extra creature comforts that have a bit of style to them.

Can't help but feel much of the automatic "oh I'm so sorry" style responses you always see, specially on here, are based as much in snobbery as actual real-world experience.

I'd hazard a guess that most people on here see cars as more than an A-B tool which is why we get those comments, quite how that translates as snobbery is beyond me.

Perhaps snobbery isn't exactly the right word, maybe empathy?

Understanding that different folks use cars for different strokes and accepting that not everybody cares that they are getting the ultimate driving experience every time they get behind the wheel to nip to ASDA.

My point was that the responses in this thread were perfectly atypical (on the whole) utterly ignoring that a large and modern car with a known history for £1500 is a total bargain and high-five worthy and suggesting that it should instantly be chopped in for something no doubt more expensive.

It's only a bargain because he got it through family though, hardly high-five worthy. I mean if I was to get a free car I could hardly go around parading it saying I got the deal of the century...

Hi-fives or Low-Fives are not required :p

I have my weekend car and bike for fun and tinkering. This is a car I use to yomp up and down the country economically.

What this car does do is allow me to save money and wait till a bit later to buy something much better :)

Would I have hunted one of these out and bought it if it was not a known car with a load of new bits, and at a low price? Certainly not. However, it will fill the gap, and as long as it keeps running (and under warranty) and not costing me any money, I would be daft not to keep it! It's resale value is low and is not going to rise once i have knocked it well over the 100k mark soon :D

If you disagree, what could I buy that would be better for 1500 quid?! (Price i was offered at trade in at a dealer the other day)
