Bourbon, Rye and American Whiskey

4 of 4, War Eagle.

I had high hopes for this one as the bottle/branding is just well, manly, and American lol.

And actually it turned out to be the best of the 4. It's really pretty good I will get a bottle of makers mark or Woodford next (as these are both a good base line) and try this one against those to see.

Got a bottle of makers mark, tried it against the war eagle.

Makers mark has a better flavour, more fruity, but.... The war eagle was slightly smoother.

Makers Mark is a bit cheaper and much easier to get hold of, so still comes out on top, but War Eagle is a good one if you ever want to try something new.

:)

I normally order from Master of malt and they don’t stock War Eagle, I might get some makers mark at the supermarket instead, I’m trying to cut down on what I spend on whisky, so lately prefer to buy more easily available stuff that’s a little cheaper. I recently got a bottle of Slipknot No9 whisky which was nice but a bit pricey.

Honestly from those I've tried the rarer ones and more expensive ones - to a point I wouldn't ever spend more than maybe £35 on a bottle.

Anyway, point I'm trying to make with bourbon, your Makers Mark/Woodford Reserve are very good, easy to get and often on good offers and are some of the best I've tried to date.

The only one that springs to mind is John B. Stetson Kentucky Straight, which is normally £29 a bottle now that one is good.

Some are made with Rye, most Wheat, some are a mix of both. I'd consider them all still to be bourbon.

I need to try more Rye versions, the only one I tried was Bulleit Rye, and I preferred the regular version so it put me off a bit.

Wild Turkey Long Branch.

It's not bad, better than Regular Wild Turkey, and definitely better than Wild Turkey 101 which I didn't think was very good at all, particularly given the price.

It's not worth the £40 asking price though, not that I paid that

EDIt: after a week of drinking this I think my initial post was a bit critical, this is actually really good, I still stand by its not quite worth the £40 price tag but well worth a try if you every get the change/its on offer.

Peaky Blinders Bourbon

This isnt actually as bad as I had though, thought it was going to be awful, and I have tried worse for more money.

It's not amazing its a bit harsh (particularl when tried stright after drinking the Longbranch) but its ok.

EDIT: This one really grew on my as I was drinking it, very good for £22 bottle.

Can anyone recommend a good bourbon or rye to make an old fashioned?

A lot seem to suggest a high proof, so Im thinking something like a Rittenhouse Rye or woodford reserve double oak?

Fancy trying an old fashioned as never tried one before, so it needs to be a decent sipping whisky as well in case I don't like the old fashioned, Ive tired both above before and preferred the Rye on its own.

How high ABV?

Knob Creek is 50% and pretty decent, it's got warmth Tobit but you can drink it straight.
