As some of you know, I currently drive a Corsa VXR. I've owned this car for nearly three years now.

Great for a short driving session. However, the same cant be said for journeys that last an hour or more :( . Must have something to do with these -

Great when you're wide awake...... Not so great when you want to lean back and cruise.

I'm trying to put my boy racer image behind me. I cant continue to show up for work in this...... this loud thing. I need something laid back and easy on the eyes.

And before Fox and his evil minions start digging up information from past threads  I'd like to point out that I am aware of my S2000 thread and similar.

Fingers crossed I'll be able to purchase a new car before the end of this year. I just hope it isnt another 200+bhp hot hatch.

Shortlist-
5 Series
VXL Insignia
Vectra
A4
3 Series (Saloon)

I guess you can see the pattern here... Executive!

Cant say I've driven any of the cars in that list so I'll be doing a lot of research!

Thanks in advance for any help / advice.

If you want a Vectra or an Insignia that has a decent engine, you'll probably end up in the VXR.

which leaves you with the same image as you have in the corsa. You just swap 3 doors for 5.

Whats your budget ?

The BMW 335i is an epic car. Something like this would be very nice

25k though.

I said no to the boy racer image though... So why would I want to look at the VXR lol!

25k is more than I plan to spend..... Nice though!

Because if you want to have some fun, you want one with a decent engine. Which on a VXL means looking at the VXRs

Also, 15k really isn't enough for a decent saloon. The BMW 335i is out of range, so that leaves e46 330i as the only 3 series saloon in budget.

Not really any audi's i'd want at that price either. 3.0 Quattro isn't that amazing and the S4 is too old at that money.

Personally i'd say ignore the boy racer image and get this.

But thats me :D

Are you out of your cotton picking mind.....!

Depends if he wants to keep the sort of enjoyment he gets from the Corsa VXR

or if he just wants a good saloon car. If thats all he wants then the 325i will fit the bill nicely.

Look its not an image I want anymore. Sick and tired of people eggin me on to boot it all the time.

I like VXRs but you try driving around in one... People constantly think youre up for a race.... It was cool at first but now I just want to relax behind the wheel.

If I were rich enough I'd have a laid back saloon along with something similar to the corsa... Sadly Im not rich at the moment lol.

The 5.

I don't know about the OP, but spunking 15k on a car that is slower than my last car would be a no go.

It would have to be the 330 or 335 IMO.

I believe the 335s have just creeped in to his budget, too (albeit in SE trim).

Are you serious?

You mean to tell me going for something slower is seen as a downgrade?

You haven't told us your requirements here, so we are guessing.

The nice interior and image of a BMW will only take you so far if you like your fast cars. Once you're "over" these things, you'll start missing the fun/fast stuff.

When that urge re-spawns I'll get a decent fast car. One with a decent sized engine. Not some 1.6 litre with an afterthought (turbo) fitted to it!

Would it not make more sense to upgrade to a car that meets both requirements, rather than buying yet another car when you get that itch?

I mean it (330) is in budget, meets all of your requirements and is going to cost similar money to run than the "slow version".

The next car may meet that urge..... If it doesnt then tough luck for me lol... We cant all get what we want in life lol!

ST: 14k, 20MPG, Main dealer servicing.
Clio: £2.2k, 32MPG, DIY servicing.
Focus: ~£5k, 34MPG, DIY servicing, as it'll be run into the ground.

None of it is really important, other than the difference being that I downgraded because I needed two cheaper cars, my thoughts expressed in this thread relate to upgrading.

"upgrading" our definitions differ.

My last car was an RX8 some classed my decision to get the Corsa as a downgrade... I disagreed!

The fact that you want to spend double what your current car is worth on a new car, that is almost certainly an upgrade. No one in their right might would consider doubling their spend on a car if they perceived the move as a downgrade.

If you meet your requirements and spend more on a car, it is an upgrade IMO.

Of course it doesn't work both ways, you don't have to spend more to upgrade, but it is all relative to what you want out of a car and how you perceive a car's merits. Ie. Some people look at performance figures, others look at image and comfort, while there are others that look at it as an all round package compared to the requirements.

I dont want to start an argument..... But a few posts back you basically said getting something slower would be classed as a downgrade. Just for the record I never said I wanted something slower.... Never said I wanted something faster either. But you know what I mean!
