Damage any part of the brain and you will lose your memory/lose the ability to move/become retarded etc.

Not 100% every time.

What about the guy who recently fired a nail from a nail gun into his head? It was removed and he had zero complications.

Or the guy who had a crossbow bolt go into his brain through his eye socket, he was fine too.

Then there's the people who have tumors etc removed and do rather well afterwards.

The brain doesnt calculate in the way you think it does, obviously catching a ball is about hand-eye coordination, moving the hand in a specific way to catch things in your view and how far away it is.

This turns into muscle memory and it simply becomes easier as you do it.

Your brain is not calculating Pi or curvature of the earth, you do that consciously with the brain as the computer, you simply give it a set of rules and it(you) will eventually work it out, the brain is practically another muscle in a sense.

If you lose your eyesight, you cannot catch ball, its all about the coordination between your senses and muscle memory, not math or physics.

i cannot stress enough how relevant this is to this thread, having studied the basics of neural nets for my comp/sci degree

If you are interested in this then Demis Hassabis (the ex-Bullfrog bloke Syndicate/Theme Park) has authored some very good articles since his move into neuroscience.
