Changed the rear pads on my wifes Civic today as they were on their last legs and the wear indicators were making an awful sound when the brakes were applied. All went well and checked the car out to make sure they work and that the handbrake works but when I took the car for a test drive I noticed how diff they feel to my Accord. There's not much play in the pedal but the brakes feel soft when compared to my Accord.

So I guess as everything else is working it must be to do with the brake fluid, how often should it be changed? seem to recall every 2 years of so as over time moisture gets in which effects it's performance. Also how much is a garage likely to charge to do this?

new pads on old discs can take a couple of hundred miles to bed in, if your happy its safe see how the feel of the pedal develops with use.

Do as Jon says, take it out and wear the pads in a bit. As the disks are scored and the pads are flat it'll take time for them to wear so they fit the contours of the disks.

Brake fluid is hydroscopic, so it absorbs water, this then lowers the boiling point over time and can introduce bubbles if worked hard. 2 years is the recommended change time.

Now why the hell did I not think of the above :), thanks guys, will give them a week or 2 and see how it goes.

i hate brake fluid changes, you always know that one of the bleed nipples is going to break off, and will it break off in the closed position? buggery will it.

stupid things.
