brakes stuck on renault clio

hi, last night i changed my front brake pads, i went out for a test drive a bit later and all seemed to be well until i stopped and put my handbrake on for a sec as i took the handbrake of and tried to pull away again the car wouldnt move. it seems the back wheels have locked on. when i release the handbrake the warning light on the dash goes off but the wheels are still locked.recovery guy said he thinks its a calliper siezed. there has been a grinding noise coming from the back wheels for a few days but it just seems coincidence theyve seised after fitting new pads?

i used to have to pull the handbrake up realy far before it was on firm now it will only move up a few clicks after the wheels locked on. any ideas? common problems etc etc?

When you changed your front pads what did you do, step by step?

Is it drums or discs/pads on the rear?

just been and checked and its the driversside wheel only thats locking, passenger side is moving freely, im pretty sure thats the one which has been grinding 2....thought its was the front pads grinding as they were low but it carried on grinding after i changed them

new rear drum then? and possibly just coincidence that it went shortly after i did the pads?
 
Well braking systems are not that complex really so it can only be one of three things.

ABS - ABS systems usually switch off if there is a problem but perhaps it is locking the rear o/s wheel for some reason, maybe take out the ABS fuse to check although I dont think this is a likely fault.

CABLE - If the handbrake cable is dodgy then it usually is really loose as apposed to really tight.

FLUID - This is what I think the problem is. When you pushed the caliper back in what did you use? Did you take the lid off of the brake fluid resivoir. I think there may be too much fluid now in the system or maybe even air.

If you do a search on bleeding brakes there was a thread on here a week or so ago on it which would be worth reading.


I could be totally wrong as I am a newbie myself :)

When I got my Rover the rear brakes were a bit naff, they just needed a good clean so take the rear wheels and drums off and have a look, take some pics if need be.
 
yeah i did take the cap of the brake fluid resivoir so ill have a go at bleeding it...drag the car into the garage 1st and get the fan heater on to warm me up. the thing that makes me think the drum has seized is the fact it has been grinding for a few days.

thanks for the replies ill give them a shot in a few mins and let you know how i get on.
 
Get the drum off and check the shoes, springs, cylinders, handbrake mechanism etc. Can't see a fluid problem causing the brakes to stick on to the extent the car struggles to move. The handbrake mechanism has probably seized by the sound of it.
 
when i did mine i never took the lid of smashed my hands up pushing it back in with a lump of wood and a g clamp.. well 2 days later i had the same prob with my vw polo.. so i jumped the brakes with the engine of and turned it on then did this about 5x and it come of.. i dunno what happend but my dads mate told me 2 do that and it worked???
