My Spec
- Athlon 64 2x 3800+ skt939 2GHZ dual core
- A8N - SLI deluxe board
- Paxpower3 400w PSU
- 2X184 pin DIMM Platinum 1GB
- BFG GeForce 7600 GT OC 256MB Graphics
- Maxtor Diamondmax 10 SATA 80GB
- akasa 460w powersupply [ with blue light ]
- Soprano thermaltake case

All brandnew components. To begin with powered up, POST beep, seemed ok. Then had some trouble installing XP kept freezing then would progress to next stage. I thought it could be SATA. To be honest I don't know anything about "SATAN" HDD so was winging it. Following the Maxtor webguide, used floppy at F6 tried many driver options, found out could have skipped this as I have SP2 XP. Also set the BIOS so HDD was bootdrive as per Maxtor guide. Got through the partion/format drive part then it would hang on the xp startup logo. Could not get beyond this point. In FreeDos, said C: not formatted??? Had a look on web as I was really stuck here.

Read on a forum to clear BIOS. Could be at that f*a*r*t*ing around with the BIOS, lets clear it. Sounds easy. My handy ASUS manual made it sound easy, demon on my shoulder said "do it do it" so I did it. SO I removed CMOS battery, did the jumper movement 1-2 to 2-3 [for 5-10 sec] then back to 1-2 put the battery back. Fired her up and nothing just fans & mobo light NO POST. Messed with the jumper thing.

Got really into it, stripped off a piece at a time when I got back to processor and fans only then I get the 1 long 3short beeps [ no memory ]. Took the whole thing out, apart, started again still nada.

At this point my 5 grandkids, my son & daugther [all 3-16yrs] lined up like angels, looking at me with sad eyes tightly gripping their favorite games, talk about pressure to perform. Is there anyone out there who can help? Also could please explain as if talking to village idiot, please!

cast it back - thou art a demon

I think this mobo is going to be cast back to werefore it came and that be the end of it! Demons be gone!!!

So the system no longer posts? You sure you put the jumper back to its original position? Battery seated ok and in the correct way round?

probably a stupid question but, you have 2 power supplies listed in your spec. which one are you using? If your using both you will need a relay unit to start them both at the same time.

Hi!

Welcome to the forums! :)

The SATA problem you described at the start is a problem with Maxtor hard drives not being fully compatible with the nForce 4 chipset. You can get around this usually by disabling NCQ

It is unlikely that FreeDOS supports NTFS, which is the preferred filesystem for Windows XP. If it does not support the file system it will state that the disk is not formatted

Unfortunately when the motherboard does nothing on boot up it can point to a faulty board. If it beeps, however, when the memory is removed this is a sign that it is still alive.

Did you knock any of the power connections out? If you forget the 12V 4-pin square molex connector you will get the same symptons as you describe

The ASUS motherboards often default to using a voice reporter to signify any problem. Try plugging some speakers into the on board sound and see if you can hear anything

Try booting it with just one stick of memory, the CPU and the graphics card, nothing else. If you have one bad stick and one good stick I've known ASUS boards just to do nothing like you describe.

Good luck! :)
