Brand new PC build failing

Ive spent a frustrating day trying to get my newly purchased PC (from OCUK) to work and am hoping you guys are able to help. Ive built numerous PCs before but am stumped on this one.

I purchased -

Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.66GHz (1333FSB) - Retail 1 £106.99 (£125.71)
GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400C4 800MHz Ultra Low Latency DDR2 Dual Channel Kit (GX22GB6400UDC) 1 £39.99 (£46.99)
Shuttle XPC SG33G5B Aluminium Barebones System - Intel Core 2 Duo (LGA775)

The PC reaches the POST but gets no farther. The screen 'corrupts', by that I mean lines appear all over the screen which appears frozen. On the one or two occasions Ive managed to get beyond here, my vista install fails again with the lines appearing everywhere.

Ive installed everything according to the instructions, and have used Arctic thermal compound for the CPU. Ive stripped everything down to just 1 ram module and hard drive. The heatsink which came with the CPU would not fit the shuttle, but in any case I was advised the stock cooler on the shuttle is sufficient. I cleared the CMOS, loaded optimal defaults in the BIOS and now believe this to be a hardware fault.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi,

Is the northbridge heatsink firmly attached, onboard GPU will be integrated into this so if it's getting hot though bad contact you'll have issues.

Also worth looking at the hardware monitoring in the BIOS to see if any temps or voltages show strange readings.

Have you set the voltages and timings for the memory manually? Geil need about 2.1v wheras default is 1.8v.

Regards

I also say that it sounds like GPU overheating and if it's located in the northbridge like decto says then you'll need to remove the nb heatsink and clean/apply some new thermal paste in there.

Just wanted to thank you for your post, after I changed the voltage to 2.1 I was able to install Vista and so far its been fine. Ive never had to do this on a build before, and Im not sure how I would ever of known that were it not for your help. Also, many thanks to everyone who offered advise, its much appreciated!! :)

You should have had a leaflet in the ram package telling you that the ram required 2.1v
a case of RTFM :D
only j/k
Glad you got it sorted :)

It's great when you finally sort a problem, when your convinced its totally borked.

So nice to sit down and play on your new pc after its all up and running smooth :)
