Broadband & gaming

Is anyone using Sky Fibre Unlimited and using it for heavy downloading in the Surry area?

If so, what do you think of it and how much you paying for it with any packs you included like TV and Phone?

We thinking of moving to from Virgin Media to save some money, but I really don't like Sky or BT, always had trouble with them and there is always a flipping van of theirs in-front of their house doing something with their box... :/

Hi chaps, thinking of swapping my broadband ISP (in order to combine phone / internet costs etc) as we are a touch skint and looking to same some money.

Pains me to consider it, but Sky are looking at being the cheapest option for us, but also considering BT as well.

I'm currently with Zen who I must admit, have been fairly awesome. But they are expensive (£30 a month for standard ADSL).

Gaming with Zen is pretty epic, BF3 pings are 8-20ms - And this is where my main concern arrives. I'll be committing to Sky or BT for 12 or 18 months respectively, and it will be a major faff to go back.

Is anyone here using BT Infinity / Sky Fibre for their ISP, and can comment on gaming latency (especially BF3) at all?

Cheers,

I use sky ADSL, and I get free broadband for a year because their estimate was miles off my actual speed (which I knew it would be), and despite their best efforts they couldn't improve my line. I'm just stuck with 6.4Mb/s and 40ms latency in BF3. It sucks, but it would reduce your costs.

I've got a Sky HD TV, phone and Fibre Optic package having swapped from Virgin Media and I can't fault it. Had it since May and not had a single issue with speed, connections or slow peak hours. Virgin on the other hand was an awful experience for 18 months of the two years I put up with them for.

And if you sign up through Quidco you'll get anything from £80-£140 cash back, plus vouchers.

yeah and if you used your head and got a friends and family code ( from here ) youd have saved over £300 + a year

Virgin fibre optic - amazing for gaming/downloads.

Moved house.

Virgin ADSL - worst online gaming experience.

Indeed. I had the exact same issue. You used to be able to cancel if you moved out of the cable area, but as they can now supply ADSL and a Phone line they will keep you in contract.

Was especially annoying as I had been with them for many years and had upgraded within the last year which had kicked off a new 12 month contract.

The ADSL service from Virgin is shockingly bad. Stay well away.

Don't quite get what you are having a pop at me for.

Any how.

Back on topic.

I'd also add that my mate has had Sky copper for at least the last 5 years and never a minutes problem and neither did I when I had at 3 different properties.

Sky ADSL unlimited here, getting a solid 19.5Mbps downstream and 1.48Mbps upstream (only a knats todger from the exchange though! :D). Solid connection and the N wireless router is ok if a little basic. Pings are always 35-45ms for uk/europe based servers, not fantastic but more than good enough for online gaming.

Support has been excellent the only time I've needed it. I had an exchange problem caused by BT in my area, Sky's call centre was UK based. It appears I was the first person to report it in our area, they escalated the call straight through to a 2nd line tech who was very helpful. I helped him diagnose the fault as it was establishing sync to the exchange but not connecting to the Sky servers further on their network. Very impressed at speaking to someone knowledgable who was willing to work with a techy customer rather than just getting a foreign script follower telling me to reboot my router for the nth time.

Only downside was the automatic firmware upgrade to the router twice in one month ( who said they could do that to MY ROUTER!??!) which lost the uPnP and firewall settings. Not happened since as after I phoned up and said hands off they set my line to not auto-upgrade.

To be fair it's not really an issue on the short run to the cab though is it?

It is quite annoying actually, especially if your FTTC line has any issues.

Interleaving increases latency, and on FTTC it can change your pings from 14 to 60 (for example), as it did to me when my line had some interference on it. As BT have no ability to reset the line (Openreach can do this but they have started refusing to do so), I was stuck with a terrible sync profile and stupidly high interleaving for over a week. It was two weeks before things had fully settled down.

It's not like it's the end of the world but it can be quite annoying.
