Broken DVD Recorder, can it be sent back?

My friend bought a DVD recorder last month, and either threw away or lost the box and receipt.

Is has now gone wrong, it wont read any disks, even tho the tuner works ok.

Can it still be sent back? It's a Samsung.

I know with PC parts you can just RMA it based on the serial number... Is it the same with consumer electronics like DVD recorders?

I've fixed it, one of those stupid ribbon cables came loose. It's now working perfectly.

No need to worry about RMA now.
