Recently I've been getting BSODs in Vista. They seem to happen pretty randomly. It doesn't seem to be particularly more likely to happen when the system is stressed (been playing Oblivion). The actual message seems to be different every time too. This may be a hardware problem but since I only have Windows error messages to go on I figured here is the right place for it.

So here's some basic info about my system. Athlon 3700, Nvidia 7800GT, 2GB RAM. Temperatures don't seem anything out of the ordinary, around 60 degrees for the CPU.

I just want to track down where the problem is. I can post more information if it'll be useful. Thanks in advance.

This is a bit of a stab in the dark but my vista 32 bit started BSOD-ing the other week, from the error message and a little help from MS KB, something was performing an illegal memory opperation. Anyway long story short after many driver updates and experimenting, turns out it was my belkin USB wireless adaptor.

Downloaded drivers from belkin and installed them, then Windows updates said a new driver for the wireless card. I thought great an MS certified one. Once i'd downloaded that the problems started happening again so I reverted back to the one on the belkin site.

Like I say bit of a long shot, but it just happened to me this week so you never know!

I happen to have a belkin USB wireless adapter, and it looks like some of the BSOD messages could be related to it. I'll try playing around with that.

edit- on second thoughts, maybe not. There aren't any 64 bit drivers on their website.

In that case try removing that item from your machine and see if the problems also vanish.
The 64bit drivers supplied with Vista are probably anything but optimised and if there are no drivers available to download from the manufacturers website that may indicate some issues.

Before I made the move to 64bit OS's I checked and double checked that there was a driver download for every single hardware item I own.

When I first upgraded I had to use an old driver meant for Xp 64 and I noticed that was still installed. So I've got rid of that and I'll see how it goes. At least now I have somewhere to start.
