Even if you had gigabit capability through the cable network at the time, very few hosts back then had over 100Mbit/s connections and even with servers equipped with gigabit its extremely rare to see more than about 40% of that over any distance of public internet. Not to mention that at the time the version of DOCSIS they were using on the trial capped out at 50Mbit/s or 38Mbit/s depending on which part of the trial you were on.
I know mate....problem was I think that there was no real way of telling your speed! The tools were rubbish and they didn't think that the internet would be so fast. In reality I was probably getting about 25 meg, but damn it was fast!!!
The best thing was I had a switch, and mates would turn up and just download what they needed in mins rather than hours...and it never appeared you could saturate it (though home pc networks were rubbish those days)
I'm not disagreeing with anything said, just proving the speeds sometimes means nowt, a bit like your bandwidth monitoring
