BT Infinity - how do they lay the fibre optic cable

Not quite as ridiculous as you seem to find it, for short runs it's quite common for them to stick a pipe with a length of rope already run through it before they put it in the ground. Then they do literally tie it to the rope and pull it through. Used a lot on building construction sites, our guys do it like that for new electrical cables on treatment works which may only run 50-100m between buildings/tanks for example however yes it would be ridiculous for long runs!

I know, I was the one who suggested they might use ropes, which cause whoever it was to roll on the floor laughing, hence my sarcy response.

Had Sky Fibre installation recently and the engineer said that they do indeed use a compressor to jet the fibre but it's a very time consuming process for something like FTTP as there has to be someone else at every next cable junction as they're blowing it through so it can be passed in the right direction. Something like that anyway!!

Cool, thanks for all the serious responses. When you say "blow the fibre cable through" what do you mean?

The compressed air in the conduit reduces the friction so the fiber can't snag, it's basically supported on all sides by a cushion of air.
