has anyone else been getting painfully slow speeds and constant disconnecting over the holiday period?

honestly BT must be the worst ISP out there, they cap, the speeds are slow (for my anyway i live in a sucky area) but the past few weeks have been much worse than usual... the only time i get good speeds is between 12am and 7am, during my sleep...

so yeah, rant over... BT fails.

If you've gone over 80gig* (actually ~60) they will throttle you to 1Mbit for web and some stuff, 800kbit/s for video and sub 256kbit/s for P2P, etc.

*Yes I know the 80gig warning email says you will be capped from 100gig but actually it kicks in when you get the warning.

I was with AOL down the BT line. Same situation as you (speed wise).
I rang up and said WTF and they put me on an AOL network which has max 10 people wheras the BT lines have up to 80 people.
Low pings 24/7 and internet is no slower in peak times.

You need to go down another line. The only difference at your end is a different log in email address. Ring up your ISP:).

I just got off the phone with BT. They claimed that my internet was getting 2.6mbps but just to prove my point I ran a speed test there and then and got 1.3mbps so they said they were going to refer me to the engineering department. I am waiting from a call from them.

Yup I have. Hadn't occurred to me that the holiday season may have been the cause.

A speedtest from somewhere reliable (i.e. not speedtest.net)? It's not that unusual for you to be getting slower downloads than your modem connects at.

You really need to be:
  • testing from somewhere reliable
  • posting what your modem's connected at
  • looking up your IP profile
before assuming it's BT Retail. In some cases, you can help yourself...

There are instructions either in stickies or in other posts to help with all three.
