I've been looking at several combinations of amps and speakers to upgrade my current Panasonic all-in-one. It's 1000w and has some thump but it's not doing Blu-Rays any justice.

I'm still trying to work out my budget. If I could do it for £200 I would lol but I know it's not possible. At first I was thinking £500 but I'm not sure it's enough. One of the first combo's I was looking at was the popular:

Sony STR-DH800 amp & Tannoy SFX 5.1 speakers (£450)

This is a £600 setup with price reductions from RS but there are a few things stopping me, like the lack of SQ from the bottom end Sony amp. I mean how much of an upgrade would it really be from my current rig, £500 worth? Other things like no HDMI passthrough without the amp being turned on all the time put me off the Sony.

Yamaha RX-V765 & Q Acoustics 1010i 5.1 speakers (£700)

This is a £1k setup (£500 each) with decent price reductions but £700 is more than I wanted to spend. One thing I like about these speakers - apart from being well thought of - is I get the option to upgrade to 7.1 just by adding a pair of floorstanding 1030i speakers at a later date. This amp seems a good, strong all rounder.

I've never seen anyone recommend the second combo together, individually they both seem decent. Obviously I'll have a listen before buying...

Question is are these a good combo? Worth busting my budget or could I spend my cash more wisely... better amp and spend less on speakers or vice versa?

I'm going to go to RS tomorrow and have a listen to that combo, I think it should be good.

I've found it's little brother the RX-V565 for £100 less. It has all the same features but it's not had the internal component upgrades. Pity RS have stopped selling this model as I won't be able to compare them.

The Denon 1610 looks decent aswell, then there's the Onkyo TX-SR607.... too many choices!

Have any Onkyo owners had problems with their amps running hot??
