Build for vst music production

Cheers Trusty. Y'know what? I have a Sony 7280 DVDrw and I as shocked at how loud it was the first time I used it.
I specced the OcUK one as I figured it couldn't be any worse than the Sony :D

Maybe samsung/LG have figured out quiet drives. I dunno.

You want a revised build done PeeJay?

Thinking about it, it doesn't really matter how loud the DVD RW is. I wouldn't be using it while recording, so as long as it's quiet when idle then it's good for me.

Shouldn't need another build, thanks Petey, but would appreciate advice on the PSU question - is it worth getting a dirt cheap PSU now and replacing it with the fanless Seasonic when it's in stock or should I stick with what I have? I don't know how practical/impractical this is.

I think I'll ditch the second hard drive as I don't think I'll utilise a RAID array at this stage, so if you think there's anything worth upgrading using the extra £75 in order to get it quieter or more powerful, I would be grateful to hear.

Otherwise, I think I'm nearly ready to buy, buy, buy!

Thanks for your help.

Glad you like it.

I do have one small concern. That mobo has a massive heatsink sticking up and I'm wondering if the width of the 140 fan or even the Thermalright heatsink itself will clash with it.

He's already sorted on the soundcard front.
For his uses, a 3930k will be a more useful than a 2700k/3770k as he needs as much processing power as possible.
The ssd would be ok, but the samsung is easily the better and undoubtedly more reliable choice.
The gpu is unnecessary, as all he needs is dual display support.
Nice PSU, but 660w is overkill for his requirements.
The cooler's probably fine, but I'd take the True 140 over the Gelid any day of he week.
£177 for a 2tb hdd?

Ivy does run a bit hotter due to intel's crappy thermal paste, but since it's faster clock for clock, you don't have to OC as high to get the same/better results.

:)

Definitely agree with Petey here on the more powerful processor and happy to spend the extra £20-£30 odd for the GPU.

I am a bit concerned about the fit issue. I've had a good look at both products and it does seem to to me that it would fit, but there isn't quite enough info out there to be sure. Oh well, I'll take the gamble and just go with it.

Here is the updated build (note removed the wireless PCIe - this computer is going to sit right next to the router so wired is fine).

I think I'm going to go with this. Any last minute thoughts from anyone?

Looks good to me. The cooler thing won't be problem. Just mount it vertically with the fan underneath pushing air through the heatsink if it doesn't go in horzontally.
As long as you have an exhaust above it in the roof, it'll be just fine.
It'd probably be just fine even with no fan above it tbh, but it does help.
