Basically I have not got a new pc in ages and my old pc is starting to look a bit on the slow side, not being able to play the latest games at all or with the graphics so low there is no point in it. So with a budget of about £1500 I have come up with the following spec:-

mypc.jpg

My goal is to overclock the processor to about 3 GHz and to raid 0 the 2 hdd, my main question is with crossfire will these cards work together? And is Overclockers RAM sufficient? I was thinking about strapping the Delta Fan to the heat sink. Changing the case fans for the AK-183s as well as fitting another delta to the rear fan. Any thoughts and advice is very welcome as I have not built a pc in a while.

Thanks

Welcome to the Forums.

1. the PSU is a bit of an overkill tbh.. look at the Corsair 620w

2. Memory, I'd go for 4gb of PC2-6400.. 2Gb will cost you under £50 easy.

3. Delta no no no.. very noisy and there are better 120mm fans.

4.I'd replace the raptor with a Sumsung Spinpoint 500GB for half that price. Not much difference in performance tbh

5. As for the CPU cooler, again there are better and cheaper.. The Artic Cooler 7 is under £20 and cools 10oc under the the stock cooler.

thanks for your imput.

instead of the deltas i was thinking the Akasa AK-174BKT-B for the cpu,
as for memory im looking at 1066 dont want to go lower to save a few £.

im not looking for space im looking for speed with the HDD. dont mind spending more for the speed increase.

as for the psu i went on a watt calc on the web and it came in at 900+ watts for the setup and overclocking. wether this is correct or not i dont no..
will 620w really be ok? for overclocking it?

i like the The Artic Cooler 7. ill go for that instead. would it be worth getting the Arctic silver or just staying with the standard stuff?

Do you plan on overclkocking above 4797 MHz? Only at that speed is 1066 MHz RAM running at its rated speed when paried with a Q6600. It's a bit silly to spend more than necessary, isn't it?

PC2-6400 will take the CPU up to 3.6 GHz without going past its rated speed. Is that enough?

fair enough :) if i know all this already i would not be posting. so which is the best ram i can get for this setup without going into silly money.?

???

I think you are confussing the effective FSB of the CPU with the effective FSB of the system. They are not the same thing.

A 1066 CPU requires the minimum of 533MHz (PC2-4200) so PC2-6400 is well over this.

Don't be fooled by the RPM of the Raptors. Most SATA-II drives are just as fast despite the slower RPM. The samsung I mentioned comes with 16MB cache and newer HDD are coming with 32MB.

Raptors are noisy too and double the cost... I've just got rid of mine.. has to be the worst purchase choice I've ever made.

Yes I have a corair 620W running a Q6600 and an 8800GTX..

You may have entered into the calculator 4 processors when the quad still counts as one as far as power consumtions is concerned.

This is upto you. I always choice AS and it's best off doing this when you build.. not latter.

Make sure you apply no more than a size of a grain of rice. Smear it across the CPU until it's all covered using a piece of cling film on the end of your finger. Do not be tempted to put more on. It's quite hard but be patient with it. It should look all smooth looking when finished.

surely cheaper but not better?
I thought the thermalright ultra 120 extreme was the best heat sink you could get... just very expensive.

well I was looking at reviews first and it did come out on top which is why i added it but the other one does fair pretty well too so I don’t no.

Honestly I can drink £60 on a Saturday night so I m not fussed about spending a bit of money on something more beneficial

it does do well in reviews, but the fixing mechanism is pretty lame which is why people don't tend to recommend them.

yep my bad, clicked the wrong button, feel like a fool now lol. :S

well that saves a few £££ :)

is the Coolermaster Real Power 620w Modular Power Supply any good?

Can't hear my Corasir 620W.. System is very silent.. The only thing I can hear is the wife nagging me to come to bed.. so maybe noisy PCs aren't so bad after all :D

lol... my wife is the same "i can hear your computer, come to bed", "your chair is squeaking, come to bed", "i can hear you mouse clicking, come to bed"!

ok is 1 OcUK GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - OEM

better than duel Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 2900 Pro SILENT Heatpipe 1024MB GDDR4 VIVO TV-Out/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (21119-01-40R)??

Yes, by a significant margin. The GTX is just about the best GPU you can buy.

He means 2*2900pro's in crossfire. Crossfire will be faster, but can give problems i believe. A heads up: there will be newer GFX in the next few weeks that will be somewhat better- not so much in performance but will be less power hungry in ATI's case and better value on the nvivda side. So if you are not in a rush then you might be better holding off.

About your original spec: Delta fans are *extremely* noisy. We are talking hairdryer noise here!
