recently my m1710s laptop GPU [nvidia] blew [design fault] so im left with a laptop that can boot up and go on the internet with but not even play a dvd cause i get a BSOD

so, the new build

i have..
i7-920 D0 OEM CPU
850W corsair PSU
1.5TB seagate 7200.11 HDD
noctua nh-u12p cpu cooler

on the way
asus p6t SE [cause im only going radeon from now on! so no need for SLI]

waiting on
radeon 5850 to come into stock, they seem to be out everywhere!!

undecided
6GB of some sort of RAM - cant get mushkin in this country so im looking at g skill ripjaws 12800 8-8-8-24 but dont know much about ram speed vs latency

a case, but again, not sure
nzxt lexa blackline
NZXT Guardian 921
Thermaltake Element G Black

advice on my build would be appreciated,
some have said it was a mistake going i7 920

Welcome to the forum mate.

1st thing - remove the competitor links - they are against the rules. If you want to post links to cases use the manufacturers sites instead. Nothing wrong with i7 920 BTW.

Hi there, firstly you need to remove those competitor links out of your post as it is against the rules of this forum to post links to competitors.

Your spec looks pretty decent and if the ripjaws should be fine in that system. If you decide to overclock you should see 4Ghz pretty easil which can give a big performance boost.

links are gone, i wasnt going to buy from those just using them as refences as they have decnt pics, ill say the names instead

thanks for the friendly welcome

ive had my laptop for years so had to do a lot of research on all the new progress made,

yep, im wanting to get to 3.8GHz but never done it before, the ram is the confusing issue for me as theres so many brands and last time i looked at buyiong any for the laptop i was looking at 667 MHz DDR2

i know i want low voltage and latency and higher MHz but am unsure of how good a set i need if im overclocking as im aware that overclocking the CPU brings up the RAM too

also, any reccomendations for cases? brands would be helpful as i can then browse eaches selection

out of the 3 cases you have listed i'd go with the thermaltake as i used to have one of their cases and it was of good quality.

never had a nzxt case so cant comment on their quality im afraid.

i now have a coolermaster stacker 831 which i love as it has plenty of space and keeps everything nice and cool (didn't realise how big it actually was when i ordered it though lol)

i'd say cases are personal preference though and if you stick with the top brands like thermaltake, coolermaster, lian li or antec you wont really go wrong so just pick the one that you like the look of the best.

yeah it is a person taste thing too, ill check lian li, hant heard of them, ive never bought a case before cause ive always had a laptop or just a shop bought pc

one more thing, if you get a case with a slide out removeable motherboard tray, make sure you have enough clearance to slide it back in with the cooler installed as mine with a tuniq tower 120 very nearly didn't fit back in once the cooler was installed and i think the noctua is even taller than my cooler.

For RAM, take your pick from anything that is 1600MHz, the timings will either be CAS 9, 8 or 7. There is little point going for any tighter than 9 in my opinion, you'll get a very slight performance increase for a fair amount more cash.

Good choices from OcUK would be the Geil stuff, Corsair XMS3, Patriot Vipers or the OCZ Gold stuff. Whichever you like the look of really. :p

the patriot vipers dont seem to be there, thier spec looks good from their product info

so 1600 is the way to go if im overclocking i take it?

another thought i just had, is my p6t se good enough? the main difference i saw between it and the deluxe is the lack of sli [not an issue since im done with nvidia] and the 8+2 power, as i see you (^) have the rampage II

I was going to mention the Deluxe because of the PCIe spacing - the RIIE puts crossfire cards right next to each other. If I were buying now, I'd probably have gone with the P6TD, or perhaps the Gigabyte UD5. The Rampage was a birthday treat. :P

Oh, and this is the RAM I meant - I've just got some on This Week Only:

Meant to add:

From a 200MHz base clock, you can have CPU multi 20x/21x(turbo) for a 4GHz/4.2Ghz CPU overclock, and a RAM multiplier of x8 to get 12800 sticks running at their rated speed with minimum fuss.

if it werent for the delivery cost being £10 id get them with the 5850 video card!

those sticks are a good price too [minus delivery]

i thought the same with the spacing on the p6tD and SE

what [in real terms] do i loose going for the SE over the deluxe? how much will it hinder overclock?

EDT i will eventually be looking to crossfire 2 5850s so the spacing is required :)
eyefinity is another feature im going to find really useful!

I'm afraid I can't really comment on the particular boards. They're both of the same family, so they won't be that different. I think big overclocks are a little less straightforward on the more budget boards, but are still possible. I'd treat yourself, as you say the spacing will come in handy. :)

I've just noticed that OcUK have got hold of more OCZ Obsidian RAM - it's a few pounds cheaper, and in my opinion looks nicer [even if it's not gold. :(]
