Hello all,

A friend of mine has recently given me his old Asus Maximus Extreme motherboard (the older one, not the version IV) as he was never going to get around to building a system with it. He also chucked in a NZXT Hush case.

My question is, as someone who has been keen to try his hand at system building for some time but never had the funds/time, are there any suggestions or recommendations from others out there who may have experience with this motherboard? Here are the components I had shortlisted:

Crucial 4GB Kit (2GBx2) PC3-10600 DDR3 Desktop Memory Upgrade 240-pin Dimm

Intel E6700 Pentium Dual-Core Processor - 3.20GHz, 2MB Cache, Socket 775

Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 CPU Cooler

Sapphire 11167-04-20R HD 5570 1GB DDR3 Graphics Card

650 WATT Power supply Alpine Black 650 WATT Silent Quiet PC ATX PSU

Western Digital Caviar Blue 500GB SATAII 16MB Cache 3.5 inch Internal Hard Drive OEM

Also a DVD drive wherever I can find one cheap.

I was hoping you guys could have a skim over this list and let me know if I'm on the right track or headed for meltdown! Many thanks in advance!

go q6600 if you can,

btw by old maximus extreme do you mean the original? there's been 4(but you said not 4 so still leaves 1-3).

whats the budget? if gaming the 5570 will be next to useless.

Stay away from the artic freezer 7 they just dont do a good job of cooling if its anything like my artic freezer 13 - loud, inefficient, poor build quality etc etc. Also definitely listen to the advise about the psu. It may not make much sense but read a few comparison reviews and you will see that you need a corsair or equivalent unless you want to be sending back that psu in a few days time.
What are you going to be using the system for? It might be worth stretching to 8gb memory if the board supports it and you'll need a 64bit os to compliment it unless you already have one.
