Just listened to this account of a UK schoolgirl who was stabbed in the eye and various other places at the end of a campaign of bullying by another pupil...

Listening to this what she has said, I think she is spot on with a lot of what she is saying (particularly about how most bullying is based on social status rather than simple ideas such as racism) and it makes me wonder whether there has ever been an effective anti-bullying policy.

Has anyone ever known an effective way of stopping bullying...

Bullying? No. Individual bullies? Yes. One of the few situations where "fighting fire with fire" does seem to work....completely wrong of course, and I would never condone doing what a friend of mine did and throw a bully clean over a hedge and out of school grounds....

When I was a lad, simply telling the teacher stopped it in every instance. Contrary to popular belief, yobs do not run the school.

Unless the bullies mates decide to jump in or one of them pulls out a knife, which happened a few times to folk at my old school.

Teachers were still as useless at dealing with it then as they are today.

So long as bullying is treated as something schools deal with it won't be dealt with.

Any physical violence should be treated as the crime it is - children should have citizenship classes from a very young age informing them of their rights and clearly demonstrating that violence gets you banged up.

Schools don't need a bullying policy, they need to teach kids their rights and let the appropriate government bodies deal with enforcing these rights.

My personal experience of bullying consisted of me having enough and launching myself at one of the biggest guys at the time (end of year 9 I think). Didn't win but battered him too. Ever since that everyone's opinion changed of me and I became the strong silent type you don't take a **** out of.

It started ever since I joined the school in november and I tried to "ignore them" thing but the only result was them doing things behind my back like putting wood glue in my bag, padlocks (god bless the caretaker and his cutting skills) and my phone being stolen. As you can imagine detention was hardly a deterrent and did jack all and teachers can't do much beyond that. Once the waterbombs came I didn't stand for it. So yeah my case was solved by good ol' violence and I know quite a few people with the same story as me. Not saying it's the perfect solution but it definitely worked for me.

tbh, if your being bullied, get bulked up, do martial arts, kick the **** out of them back.

or call the police tbh.

I was bullied a hell of a lot when I was in Primary school. All of the boys used to take it in turns running past me kicking me in the shins at break time. Always used to go home with my shins black and blue. One day enough was enough so I went over to the ring leader who was supposedley the hardest kid in the year and gave him the pasting of his life. I then went to his older brother and told him in no uncertain terms that if he tried anything in retribution he would get a hiding as well. Amazing that I never got bullied after that.

Times are different now and im not sure if that is the best way to deal with bullying. Bullys exist and thrive on the fear they put into people.

My brother was bullied for years by one particular kid without the schools ever being able to do anything about it. One day I snapped, chased him down, threw him to the ground, stamped on his head and left him unconscious in the middle of the road.

Didn't have a problem with him after that.

I'll never forget someone 2 years younger than me at secondary school who got it into his head that he could try and bully me, his brother was reputedly exceptionally hard and he was relying on that and the fact that I probably wouldn't give someone that much younger than me a pasting. He was mistaken and it turned out his brother wasn't interested (thankfully).

I was bullied for a short period at school by a guy in an older year. It went on for about 2 weeks, then I told my tutor and it was stopped.

ALL bullies are cowards, that's why they bully people. As JRS says, fire-with-fire sometimes works on this one. The 'cool kid' in my class used to constantly pick on me in English lessons, jogging my elbow when I was writing and pushing my books on the floor, etc. It remains the only time I've ever punched someone. One shot to the face knocked him off his chair and a follow-up while he was down did the trick. He was only ever nice to me after that.

Bullying only continues because the victim is too scared to tell anyone or do something about it. As soon as you take the power back you've removed the bully's greatest weapon.

Teachers are useless in dealing with "bullying" situations. I remember when one mate of mine at school used to get bullied left right and centre and the only way to stop it was when me and some other lads had to get in the middle of it. Finally he went to a teacher about his problem who just gave them a telling off only for the problem to expand even furher with him getting beaten up, behind the teachers back.

Interesting thread.

I got smacked in the face once, about 6 years ago by a gang of nobbers who began to chase me down the street, I was like 'wtf?' . They started to shout "oi, come 'ere! you ******* ****, gonna kick the *whistles* out of you!!

At this this point I decided to leg it. And just like in the films, I fell over! stumbled and got a beating to the face once by another guy and again by another. They just walked away.

Couple of days later I saw them again, just the two of them this time and I was walking straight towards them  on a busy road, I was hoping it wasnt them but as I got closer it was :(. He grabbed me and threatened to throw me in the road.

Now where all mates drinking down the pub...Bloody adolesences.

Absoloutly, it's about time that kids knew the seriousness of their actions and fully understood societys moral code.

I was bullied for one morning on the first day of high school.

Back then I still had anger problems; I kinda flipped and put one of them in hospital.

Nothing prevents bullying like a reputation for being a bit odd...

i was bullied with my friends, not as an individual, but just for having long hair. i was Very quickly tagged as an enemy to all lol. looking back its kinda funny. mwe and my best matesoon learned that we could prevented it by talking to the lads who used to bully. kind of 'keep your friends close and your enemies closer' kinda thing. any kind of converstation was enough to make them totaly forget about it.and instead of bullying they would just say 'alrite' and move onto another person. not always the case, but it can be applied in certain circumstances.

i did witness a lot of bullying though. and it seems that the teachers are not 'useless' but just powerless. theyre not allowed to do anythign these days.
the best bet was telling the head, or deputy. he would personaly hunt them down and make sure it never happened again !

None uniform days were by far the worst, there was literaly riots on ever charity 'non uniform' event. the charvs would dress in their best atire, and would run riots.

I took my eldest daughter out of her first school when she was FIVE! due to the schools total disregard of the bullying she was enduring. They told me it was a playground problem and therefore it wasnt something they could deal with  The bully was a very very intelligent young child who singled Sophie out and would continuously tell her that we (Sophies mum and dad) had been killed on the way home from school, or had died because our house had burnt down during the morning, real mind **** stuff, from a 5 year old girl!
