The Dutch cabinet has backed a proposal by the country's immigration minister to ban Muslim women from wearing the burqa in public places.

The burqa, a full body covering that also obscures the face, would be banned by law in the street, and in trains, schools, buses and the law courts.

The cabinet said burqas disturb public order, citizens and safety.

Immigration minister Rita Verdonk is known for her tough policies, and has clashed with past coalition partners.

Bit radical, don't you think

Very radical!

That's just plain mean! You might aswell say you are banning Muslims in public places.

Have to say i agree.

Nothing in the muslim religion says you have to wear them, all it says is dress decently and conservatively (im not muslim, so please correct me if im wrong). Its the extremist states that enforce these sorts of rules.

ATM it must be the "in" disguise for criminals , a replacement to the balaclava and stripy jumper ?

I think its a great idea, if they dont like it, then they should move back to their own country, its time these people were forced to respect other communities and beliefs, as we have done for years.

Radical?....I dont think so, if goes through...at least it is a democratic society! It is what the people want.

It is NOT a MUST for muslims women to wear that...I wont even bother explaining.

Good idea I reckon. It's no different to me walking down the street wearing a balaclava. If there's one thing I admire the Dutch for, it's their brass balls in standing up to all the politically correct crap that this country is giving in to.

Good on them.

Not really, since the vast minority of Muslim women actually wear burqas—remember that burqas are the full, enveloping, head-to-toe tent-like things that the Taliban used to force women to wear; this isn't about the khimar or even the niqab, if that's the language in the actual law.

I still disagree with it, though :)

People should be free to wear what they want in public as long as its not dangerous to other people (so I would favour a ban on burkha wearers from driving for instance). However, people have to accept that choosing to wear certain items of clothing will limit their opportunities in life. I don't think its right that teachers should wear veils, or newsreaders.

IMO if you cant walk into a shop with a motor bike helmet on or walk down the street with a baliclarva on then they shouldnt be able to have the right to walk down the street with there face coverd.

Im suprised no one has taken advantage of this and dressed up as a muslem woman and went and robbed a store of some sort.

Witness statment would go like this

Police: What did the suspect look like?

Wittness: Ummmm, like that women walking past the shop right now

Police: Get her boys!!!!1

PC brigade: OMG How could they do that to such poor women that were just minding there own buisenss by wearing there Full coverd dress, Burn the People that did it!!!

:p

I also agree with the idea. Im not anti muslim or racist but many (not all) of the people wearing these Burkhas are "guests" to the countries they live in and I personnaly think they should do their best to fit into the society in which they live in.

It's a good idea, in many places it does actually present a fire hazard, and also makes identification difficult on cctv. If they can ban hoodies in shopping centres, then equally they should ban burqas.

To be honest I find that there is a barrier when I see women wearing burqas, if the dutch do not want this barrier then they have every right to knock it down.

It's not as if other countries haven't done anything in the same light. If you go to morroco for example, a western woman would be expected to cover up her arms.

Guys, if you're concerned about identification on CCTV etc., why not just ban all face-coverings? I'd still disagree with such a law, but I don't see why it has to target specifically Muslims, as the Dutch law appears to.

Yeah, knock down those barriers by... err... building even more restrictive barriers?

For some reason I read that as Gurkhas (sp) and wondered what they were on about

PMSL same here :o

Personally i think thats a bit too much, banning someone from wearing something.
What an utter draconian measure tbh, btw i dont like the burkhas myself but still wouldnt stop someone from wearing it no matter what silly reasons they may have for it.

Ridiculous and utterly stupid imho. Yet another way to make muslims feel even more alienated.

A Burkha is not religious it's cultural. to be Muslim you simply have to wear clothes that cover your modesty up. So mini skirts and boob tubes.

Motorcyclists and others have been told to remove head gear because it covers up the face and makes it impossible to tell who you are talking to. You find almost all pubs/shops/petrol garages have signs saying all head gear has to be removed. Why shouldn't Muslims. Maybe it shouldn't be banned, but it shouldn't be used as an excuse either.
