Buy and then download games - but not steam

No it isn't...

Steam is never opened unless I give it permission and the password isn't saved..

Everyone of the games is run from It's own exe file...

Can you give example games? I've just tried running a few of mine directly from the common/ folder, and all of them refused to launch without Steam.

I've given in and installed Steam and although I've told it not to start with Windows (Which it doesn't) it still starts if I launch Civ5 and then continues to run after I close the game at which point I get an advert for something else :(

So that's yet another place that payment details are stored - and one that was hacked fairly recently so although I'm sure that it's safe I would probably have said the same before the breach last year. Yet another place with my email (Although I created a new one specifically for Steam). Yet another company analysing what I play, how long I play it for, how good (Or in my case, bad) I am at it and then in all probability sharing that information with 'carefully selected partners'

Should Steam close down at any point I'm assuming any games I have purchased through it will no longer be playable - this was another reason I didn't want a Steam account.

Sure, there are lots of good things about it but as a GOM (Grumpy old man) I have a tendency to look at the negative side of things :)

Now you have a steam account, I suggest you head into the steam options and setup steamguard, it'll protect your account against theft.

1)Steam is a delivery platform, it is designed to run in the background whilst you play your game, it does mean having to close it once you are done, a bit of a pain but it only takes a few seconds.
2)You can turn the advert popups off in the steam options.
3)Payment options are only stored if you choose to allow it to be stored.
4)The data tracking is transparent, things like the hardware survey can be viewed on the steam site.
5)Valve have always stated that if they ever have to close down they would send out an update that would keep your games playable.

Enjoy your Civ5. :)

See above. ;)

Only if you ask it to.

It's all encrypted anyway. But I doubt it'll happen again any time soon after that.

This is the internet in the modern age unfortunately, but I'm pretty sure Steam don't share any information with partners, certainly no personal info for sure.

If it's any consilation, I've been using steam with a unique email address, and never had any emails other than from support or confirmation of buying a game.

Unlikely to happen tbh, but Valves CEO has stated that if it should happen, nobody will be unable to play any games they've bought on Steam because of it.

Don't. :p Embrace the future. It's better. :p

The steam platform is cool and i dont mind it running on the taskbar, but when you have the likes of origin and other company's doing the same, things could get abit silly.

also i registerd my cd copy of hl-1 key into steam lost the cd along time ago (2004 or something) but that doesnt matter now cause its linked to my steam account :)

the offline mode needs abit of work tho!
