Buy another 970 or save for 980ti?

An OC'ed GTX 980Ti will be about as fast as 2x GTX 970 in SLI. Of course there will be the benefit of 6GB Vram and no possible SLI issues (although I admit as a SLI user for the last 9years I never had any problems).
However when you do already have and GTX 970 and if you look for a used GTX 970 at a nice cheap price then putting two of them together, you still have more enough than adequate 4GB Vram for 1440P and superb performance.
GTX 970 SLi defintely hold their ground against a single GTX 980Ti and will surpass it - and also don't forget the fact that GTX 970 are OC dreamers - I will dare to say 99% of all of them easily to 1200MHz base clock and the core and 7.6GHz on Vram giving you even more performance. I have been running 2 way and 3 way SLi GTX 970 prior to my 980Ti's, and I'd say go ahead !

I had 970 SLI then 980 SLI then 980TI and 970SLI was my first multi card attempt and I was amazed at how trouble free it was. 970SLI is about same as 980TI but at 4k I prefer 980TI over 970 SLI its just seems faster/smoother. I think thats because the minimum FPS are better than 970 SLI.

Other things you have to take into consideration is not all games will use two 970's and the extra heat/noise can be an issue if you dont do something about it.

970 SLI is fine for 1440p from what I've seen.

If you were going to 4k then really you need 980ti SLI for a smooth experience, but it's worth noting that for 1440p the 980ti is already a great card.

You could on the other hand sell the 970 you do have & put the remainder towards getting a 980ti as an alternative option. A single card solution is always preferable, but if you can get a 970 for cheap go for that.

The extra VRAM and the ease of having a single GPU set-up makes me recommend the 980Ti. By the time the 980Ti becomes insufficient you could afford to SLI.
