Buy windows 7 now or wait for windows 8 (for parents PC)

What on Earth is she doing with it? Excuse the generalisation but most people spend all their time in web browsers and word processors, which work exactly the same.
She plays around with everything in windows and loves to make a mess of it......(I guess the same thing goes for most people on this forum :p)

And old joe blogs here is the one that left to reset all the stuff she messes with..
(Wish MS would put a pin lock to get into the control panel)

Well you'll both love it. She has lots of new stuff to explore and you have push button reset. Win win. ;)

Well considering W8 is only £25 compared to £75 for win 7 I may treat myself to a new OS in a few weeks time.

Seems like a no brainer for 25 nicker.

So if I'm coming from XP do I just download the ISO when the final version is released or do I upgrade through XP?

TBH I'd rather do a clean install of W8 if possible.

I think quite a few people are wondering the same thing. Given that some people are running the preview of Windows 8 rather than an older OS, and it will require a full install for the release version we are going to buy, I rather think a clean install will be allowed. I hope so because I don't fancy installing Windows 7 and then upgrading if I need a new hard disk!

not long to go to find out though... so fingers crossed...

I think I will install Vista (came with the Dell lappy) just in case it takes my XP license and turns it into a W8 license. I'd rather lose my Vista license than XP.

Have you tried Start8? It basically makes the desktop very similar to Windows 7 and you also have boot to desktop too.

In addition, all the MUI stuff is also there.
Thanks..Have installed start8 now

What was MS thinking by removing the start menu.......:(

I also been playing around with windows 8 for last few hours and i also think it horrible and I will be sticking with W7

MS didn't 'remove' the Start menu. They merely moved it. All the Start menu is now shown as tiles in Metro. It doesn't take more than 5 mins to sort out the tiles and arrange and group them and you have a 2 click access to programmes - 1. click bottom left corner to go to Metro, 2. Click the tile for the program you want. It is quicker than using the Start menu.

having tried win8 I'll stick with win764bit as win8 hasn't really sold itself. Win8 good for tablets et al. Just lacks something on the desktop.

From previous experience win9 will be the better version.

XP and win7 good.

Vista and win8 a bit meh.

Win9 will be interesting

Maybe you're right, Baron. Maybe Windows 8 will look like the new Vista but I think that there are definite reasons to think otherwise.

For a start, Vista wasn't really such a terrible OS. My family used it after upgrading from XP and it worked well for some years. of course, it improved a bit with downloads over the time it was running. That Windows 7 was better is hardly an argument that Vista wasn't a perfectly goods oS.

Now Windows 8 does everything that Window 7 does but a bit faster - from lower boot times onwards. It gereally feels faster than Windows 7. It is claimed to be safer than Windows 7 (though that might just be a matter of waiting for viruses to catch up!) and it File history function works really well as a means of backup, with multiple versions of the files you use most.

Sorry, but I don't think you are giving Windows 8 a fair chance and, remember, Windows 9 is going to be an improved version of Windows 8 so you might as well get used to it now as later.

Yes, you're right theheyes. Everything seems to have centred on the Metro interface to the exclusion of everything else. yes, metro is an interface, primarily for touch screen but it still works fine for our usual mouse and keyboard combination. I think Microsoft is to blame for some of the problems as they have been selling the idea of Windows 8 as a tablet OS and have, to a large part ignored in their sales pitch, the other benefits.

I have found that, when reorganised and having the right tiles, Metro is actually faster than the old Windows 7 start menu. Everything is 2 clicks away! I suppose it takes time and effort to adapt to the new system but i think a year down the line people will be more inclined to move. Sadly, they will miss the £25 upgrade!

That goes for pretty much everything MS release, rarely do they get the marketing and publicity right. Why do you think they're backtracking on Metro as the interface name? Distancing themselves from the "I've not given it a chance, but I hate it cos there's no start menu/orb crowd". There might be some merit with the legalities of Metro AG, but to suggest it was a codename is BS IMO, it wasn't a codename in WP7.

Vista & Mojave anyone? ;)
