Buying 7850 to upgrade an older pc?

Edit - I guess the other alternative is buy a better cpu cooler than my current one and see about overclocking at stock volts.

If budget is not a problem I would avoid this route. 4+ year pc life cycle being your "thing" the 2500k would be the right route to take, I would not even consider the 2120, for the reasons mentioned by Marine above.

Interested to read this, as I have an E7200 clocked at 3.5Ghz. I'd bought a 4850 originally, but it started getting a bit wheezy and bought a 5850 last year. I didn't actually see much improvement in fps in Crysis, and overclocking the card didn't make any difference. So I assume it's CPU bottle-necked...

Lets put a time line on this.

If you're sure you NOT going to upgrade the CPU this year buying a HD 7850 would be a waste, don't do it.

If you sure you ARE going to upgrade the CPU this year, then go ahead. :) (Recommended upgrade 2500k or Ivy bridge replacement)

The HD7850 @ stock is 0-20% faster on 1080P gaming, compared to the HD 5870 that I have.
My old E8400 @ 4Ghz would be roughly 30% faster than your E7200 @ 3Ghz and that bottlenecked the HD 5870 on every game I played.

For people sticking to the LGA 775 platform for 1080P gaming I'd recommend spending up to £100 on a GPU.

Hmm thanks for the help here. The costs are certainly racking up with getting new motherboard, cpu, ram and coolers. Especially when I am wanting to upgrade my HTPC too. May just take the advice and go for a 6850 graphics card for now. Similar situation with cooling them to the 7850?

Might be worth looking at the prices your stuff will sell for 2nd hand.

I was shocked at how much I got for my 4gb of ddr2 ram and p45 Mobo. my e6700 wasn't worth much but I think the fact I had lapped it put people off lol.
