I took an 02 plate type-r for a test drive and I have to say I was impressed. But I am wondering what I should be looking out for are there any common faults or problems to look out for. Also what was changed on the face lift models is it worth paying the extra? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Facelift models have a lighter flywheel, and are marginally quicker 0-60.
They also have a more vivid interior - with red doorcards and red & black seats.

If you can stretch to a facelift they're definitely worth getting, but a 02 CTR will be just as good! :)

Quick list of problems off the top of my head

Dodgy paint finishes on satin silver
Nighthawk black is a b*tch to keep clean
Extracting extra power is expensive
Faulty headlight motors
2nd gear is hard to slot home when the gearbox is new
Alloys corrode
Rear tyres "feather" on the insides due to poor factory alignment
Exhaust manifold heatshield rattles
Facelifts have poorly sealed windscreens
Fuel consumption around town is poor
Headlights can get condensation in them
Paint is thin so suffer from stone chips easily
VTEC likes to eat oil at the rate of about a litre per 1000 miles
Little blue lights in the rear view mirror indicate you are about to lose your license

Despite all that, and most of the above will be fixed under warranty, I love mine to bits.

Changes to the facelift models - roughly 1500 changes, however the main ones are:

Lighter flywheel.
Additional sound deadening.
Different front and rear light clusters.
Different front bumper.
Red door inserts and red inserts on the seats.
Indicators moved to the mirrors

If you fancy something a little different see if you can source a JDM spec car in gorgeous white. They have more power due to better cams, intake and exhaust manifolds, valves, springs, smaller cat, HID's - and more importantly - an LSD. They are group 20 insurance though, but there's probably no more than 10 or 15 in the UK.

Head on over to the CTR forums for some more reading

Well I listed a few common problems above... I've personally suffered from a rattly heatshield and a poor windscreen seal and both were fixed by the dealer no problem and without question.

Warranty is just peace of mind though really. As with everything in this life - YMMV

hondas made in japan don't break

correct, where as honda's made in the UK do :p

As above, crap paint, totally useless alarm system, crappy finishes on the interior.

imo facelifts do look nicer, but apart from that, most changes are cosmetic.

Id forget the CTR and get an ITR or something like that, and thats coming from a CTR owner.

Id rather go for the DC5 or S2000 than the Civic as you can pick one up for the same price as a CTR (second hand 3-4 years old that is)

definatly. the only thing that stopped me was couldnt get insured on the dc5 or S2k :(
