Buying a new car from dealers

I "haggled" around 400 of the price of my vRS. It wasn't a situation I was comfortable with so I'm happy with that. I would imagine it depends on the salesman you deal with on the day and your attitude during the negotiation. Theres some tips online if you google about - I found it to much to remember in the end and my first attempt ended in redfaced failure :D

if you're part exing make sure you haggle them up on the price of your car, as I hear they're more likely to give you more there than they are to reduce the price of the car you're buying.

£12,000 on a VW Polo?

Have you gone quite mad?

I agree you with you now but some people need to go through this sillyness in order to see sense. Convince away - you may just save him.

a VW Polo is not an exciting car. It is, infact, simply a car. It is designed to get you from A to B. They do not even do an interesting variant or sport model. It's a white good, a tool for a job.

There is, of course, nothing wrong with cars like this. Infact, for most people, this is exactly what they need from a car and no more. However if you are chosing a car like this I think its fair to say that you don't have petrol running through your vains and that cars are not a huge passion for you.

Given this, why spend £12,000 on a car? There is no need. You could spend half this on a used car instead - perhaps a Focus, or even a Polo if you love VW - and you'd have a spare £6000 to spend on things you DO like and you DO enjoy.

And, generally speaking, a decent used car wont break down all the time and wont cause you problems. Even if it does, they wont cost anything like £6k to fix.

And if you really want peace of mind, chose a 2-3 year old Approved Used example from a main dealer.

Whatever you do, dont spend £12k on a Polo.

Fox may have a worrying post count, and I sometimes wonder if he has internet in his car to enable him to not drop his average posts per day, but this time he makes sense. Speaking as someone who has fallen into this trap, its not worth it, and you will end up regreting it. Get something just as practical, three times as cheap and uber reliable for a fraction of the cost, then spend the rest on beer (or what ever hobby you have)!

Wrong they do a sports model and gti ,they have come along way from whence they started and you can get every extra you can think of !
I'm up to 13 k now :D
This might seem madness for a polo but its only about £48 a week for 3 years
including full service and parts ,so no bills for 3 years. Then you give it back and get a new one again !
Its little more than renting a car with all the toys for a small weekly sum !

you can rent a mini for around the same price

but yes, you are getting ripped off, just get a focus or something cheap and spend the rest on something useful.
if you want to haggle, use a broker and they will do it for you
for 12k you can get a car from the class above.

Why is it stupid ,I want a small car
My current car in the last year has cost me about 3k in repair bills ,now buying somebody's old castoffs ...thats stupid ;)

I think the question you should be asking is......how in gods name did you allow yourself to spend 3k on car repairs?

Buying new cars often have more problems than used cars! The amount of time friends/family members have had to take their "new" cars back to the dealer to get a whole loada stuff done on warranty.

If you're sick of repair bills and ultimately just want peace of mind, you should go for approved used cars. Not only will you have a car that is going to be as reliable as it can be, but you'll also have a whole load more money in your pocket.

I've posted in many a thread exactly like this before and i know the OP's of these kind of threads just don't listen to good advice, but I'm going to reiterate what fox said, just to see if maybe this time it will work.

"Whatever you do, don't spend 12k on a Polo."
