Buying a Sat Nav tomorrow...

Heard bad things about these like being led into a wall, dead-ends, into mud, etc. Manufacturer fitted ones are usually best, no?

Not necessarily. My bro-in-law has an SL500 with sat-nav that is nowhere near as easy to use as the TomTom. The touch screen on the TomTom makes all the difference. He even preferred the TomTom on an Orange SPV C600 smartphone (which doesn't have a touch screen) over the inbuilt satnav.
