Buying a vauxhall insignia

Thanks or the serious replies. As usual some people have to turn a simple question into a pis*ing contest.

I asked for advice based upon a car that I am buying, for me to drive, to ferry around my family. That was all. No interest in ford mondeos, or 3 series BMW.

International Car of the Year awards mean nothing to OCUK - it's a Vauxhall. :)

You mean the European car of the year award? Past winners being the 1994 Ford Mondeo which was probably the worst Mondeo Ford ever made and the 2002 Peugeot 307 which was obviously renowned for being a great car.

Oh and when the Insignia won this award in 2009 it beat the Ford Fiesta by a huge margin of 1 point.

You only have to look at some of the winners to realise what a pointless award it is.

Why bother asking advice if you ARE buying it anyway?

Your family are very lucky to have someone who cares so much about that he'd treat them to a Vauxhall :p

Hardly a great surprise given that was the first Mondeo - lol. And look what its competition was at the time.

1 point is a win, no?

The point is, the Insignia as a perfectly OK car that is a Vauxhall. Get over it.

That said I struggle to understand why people looking to drop around 10k on a significantly depreciating car give a second thought to a £100 difference in annual road tax, or to a slightly lesser extent the few hundred insurance will vary by, or even MPGzzzz unless they do intargalactic mileage. Ridiculous logic - wouldn't even enter my thoughts. Just get the model you want.

TBH the OP did ask which model had the cheaper tax.

I never said it wasn't a decent car, I was pointing out that winning some award doesn't automatically make it a class leader nor does it stop it from being poor. I doubt the Mondeo was even judged that year because it wasn't a new model then.

easily as good as the current Mondeo,

Really? Thats odd, as the Mondeo is often considered the class leader yet the Insignia is 4 or 5th. Odd for a car that is apparently 'easily as good'.

To be honest I didn't think the Insignia was that bad - its suicide to buy one before its 4-5 years old though, as it'll just shed so much money you may find it would have been cheaper to own something nicer!

By all means not a complete comprehensive study but looking at 3 year old Insignias shows they've lost about 60% of their purchase price in 3 years whereas the Mondeo will lose around 40% in the first 3 years. I've obviously compared diesel to diesel for the sake of fairness. Hard to tell past that because the Insignia has only been around for 3 years.

I[m not sure that's true at all!

Let's look at CAP Monitor

e.g.
Mondeo hatch 2.0 tdci 140 Edge 3yrs 60k £5,525 (27%)
Insignia 2.0 cdti 130 ecoflex Exclusiv 3yrs 60k £5,250 (24%)

Note higher list price and higher discounts available on the new Insignia. The Insignia has a £2k higher list price, but more discounts are available. But after three years they are worth much the same. Certainly not 20%!

Why post a thread to then refute the replies?

Thread closed as you obviously don't want the help.
