Buying brand new - Is it REALLY that bad?

Some of his comments have been a bit bizarre and that one is no different - his 118i was £26.5k I think, the cheapest 1 Series M Coupe on Autotrader is £38k so no, he couldn't have had a 1M instead and no, the reason he didn't wasn't because it was 'an outgoing model'.
Sorry my bad, I thought I remember seeing these at around £30k. They are only 3 door anyway which is useless for me.

Beat me to my edit - grrrr :D

My point about the outgoing model was me still in new car mode. i.e I looked at the current Audi A3 and Mondeo but both are being replaced v.soon so figured isn't wasn't sensible buying one of those.

It wasn't, you are right.

Someone has to buy the new cars to give everyone second hand bargains !

I personally don't think its *that* much of an issue if you have the cash to spend, or its some sort of niche car (Mk1 Focus RS which people were reselling for what they paid a year later etc) But I can understand the wtf at depreciation.

Wasn't the Citroen C5 Executive 2.2HDI the record holder for this... 23k new, 11k 1 year later or something equally incredible?

This is the most repeated quote on the internet I'm sure, and I'm not sure why anyone says it? Everyone knows people have to buy new cars but dont worry, new car sales are not going to come to a grinding halt as a result of internet threads about value for money.
