Buying first car

I saw an Astra 1.6 SXI, 40,000 on the clock, black with the exterior pack on for 8K the other day.

That seems expensive and stupid if you have only just passed.

Buy something classic. Old golfs, polos, minis etc. You'll pick up something in good nick for a grand or so, it'll also mean you can insure it on classic insurance in your own name for a great deal less. Your astra would cost me £4200 to insure, my golf £1300

Please see some sense.

Good luck finding a decent Golf or Mini for a grand.

Also old Golfs and Minis are a finite resource, why would you recommend one to a new driver who will ditch it according to the OCUK collective, leaving one less classic for enthusiasts.

A mid/late 90s Citroen/Peugeot/Ford is the way to go surely.

I'm 24 (was 23 when got car) and went for an old banger ford 1.25 96reg to make insurance cheaper. What you are intending to do is illegal and very serious consequences if you are caught. Go for a cheap car (Sub £1500) and low insurance group car. So if you do bang it. It's fine.
Have a lot of seaches on confused.com play with job title (but still accurate). Then once you got couple years NCB then go for a slap bang modern car. Also add your parents as an additional driver even if they don't intend to drive it makes it a cheaper.

I've took everyone's advice and I've decided I'm going to phone about and have me as main driver with my mum and dad both as named drivers and hopefully get something reasonable

Take some more advice and get something older and cheaper (and better), as whatever insurance budget you have, that naff Astra will go over it. And if it doesn't go over it, you are budgeting too much for insurance.

Thanks mate!

I think you may have not got the sarcasm there mate!

Seriously, get something cheap, cheap to run, cheap to insure, that you wont mind if you put a ding or two in in your first year or two.

Next year take a slight upgrade once you have one years ncb, and after two think about a nice car.

It's just not worth spending all that money on a brand new turd and then throwing it all away because you crash and you were fronting.

Look at the following:
Early MK6 Fiesta (or even a high-spec MK5)
Seat Ibiza 1.2
Toyota Yaris 1-1.2
MK1-MK1.5 Focus 1.6

If you and your mum are using the car and need something bigger try insurance quotes on a MK3 Mondeo :). Remember a small car or engine doesn't necessarily mean cheaper insurance.

this.
OR, for example you could get the same astra (or focus/insert alternative here) from 2005 for about 3-3.5k. Sure it might be a bit more likely to throw a bill or two at you, but nowhere near enough to justify another 5k on the same car....

Is this serious 7k to insure a 1.4 astra at 19? I have two vauxhalls one is an 08plate 1.8vvt twin top design (group 18) which at 26 I only pay £360 a year to insure. When I was 19 I was driving a mk 6 escort cabriolet (group 17) with declaired mods including a new 2.0 engine, exhaust, ford rs kit and st170 rims, for that I was paying about £1300 to insure.

Are you seriously telling us that an insurance company are asking for 7k to insure a group 9, 87bhp, 1545kg hatch?

I can definitely believe thats true mate. My brother who's 19 is about to do his test and has my old crappy 28 year old 1.5 mazda because we stupidly assumed the insurance would be low. He got quoted around £2500 to insure the damn thing!!!!:eek: So he is now looking at a cheap 1.1/1.2 run around which is still 1300 odd!!!

I mean I knew insurance isn't cheap in NI but 7k is silly, silly money. I wonder what I would have to be driving to get a quote of 7k?

The best quote I currently have for the Astra is £4,800 as me as main driver from Aviva,
Still to purchase the car so I'm continuing looking around etc
