Buying good seats at events?

I'm sick of paying through the nose on ebay for good seats at events.
Me and the the missus plan on going to quite a few concerts and events this year, can anyone give me some advice on how to get decent tickets.
Do I just find out when the tickets are getting released and ring up on that morning?

If possible join the fanclub, they often get exclusive pre sales with the best seats set aside.

I prefer to purchase seats over standing tickets for most events I attend.
