Well I bought myself a Netgear WGR614 thinking it had VPN support which I found out wasn't true after powering it on.. I now need a router that does have VPN support. I've heard good things about the Linksys routers but have never bought one myself..

Which is the best model to go for? Or any other recommendations?

Cheers,
Andy

Depends what VPN you want.

Well-designed VPN protocols like Cisco (IPsec NAT-T) and OpenVPN run over UDP which means they work over any router without special configuration.

Badly designed VPN protocols like Microsoft's (PPTP) use seperate IP protocols which do not carry session state (GRE) and thus need special NAT router support.

Of course all this is only relevant when using NAT, if you're directly connected or have a routable subnet from your ISP, then there is no issue at all.

I'm just after basic VPN functionality to connect one lan to another.. Not too hot on the various different VPNs available. I've set a few up with Netgear adsl routers before and they seem to do the job, its just I can't find a Netgear cable router that supports it..

Would the WRT54GL do the job ok?
