Hi,

Was driving up the M6 before and went past 3 sets of calibration lines about a mile apart from each other. Drivers just went past at 80mph or more? What are they for? Mobile units?...Because there were no Gatsos anywhere...

I know where at least three sets of calibration lines are that have no camera and as far as I remember there never have been

There's a few places like that on the M6..

I think most are from temporary cameras in road works and the like. Easier to leave them on than close the lane and burn them off.

Yeah, ive seen them about on a few places. where they have had roadworks for a long period of time they set up semi perminent gatsos with the lines on the road. Leaving them on the road is not only the easiest and cheapest option, but has the advantage of making people slow down regardless of wether there is a camera. Its a kind of psycological thing people have, they cant cross them without slowing and checking for a camera.

You mean they cant help noticing them at the last minute, panicking and slamming on the brakes whilst wildly looking for cameras and causing a lovely concertina of braking cars behind them?

IMHO anything that makes people panic brake on the road is dangerous, be it animals, children, speed cameras or just calibration lines.

There are quite a few on the M25 (specifically between M4 junction and watford) as well and I've never seen a camera or police car around.
