Call of Duty (1) on 8800GTX - Stuttering

Well I'm definately impressed with the 8800GTX. It runs everything I throw at it on max settings with max AA and AF. (Medieval 2 on highest, Everquest 2 - on extreme settings, Oblivion maxed out).

However, on CoD it stutters. I'm not sure if this is down to the dual core system or the video card. It seems more pronounced at 1280x1024 but is still there at 1024x768.

Even with all the "optimisations" on the video card (no AA/AF etc) it still does it. I've tried setting affinity to one processor and it reduces the stutter but it still happens.

It's as if it freezes for half a second every 3-4 seconds.

Any clues?

do you have 2GB of RAM? I'm guessing yes but if you only have 1GB then stuttering will occur for the first few minutes of gameplay on a new map.

Chances are its just some sort of bug either in the drivers or with the game. Best to see if anyone else has the samje issue. I own an 8800GTX myself but I don't have CoD 2 so couldnt tell you. Sorry :D

Same here m8, getting my ass whipped big time in CoDuo due to stuttering.ive tried all drivers available = still does it. Spec

I used to get 1-2 second 'pauses' in some games (with my 6800Ultra) unless I set "max frames rendered ahead" to 0 (default is 3).

It's missing from the new drivers, but you can still set it with Rivatuner. It's in the Direct3D settings, under the 'VSync' tab, prerender limit.

is cod1 a quake 3 powered game ? I think it is so it uses opengl, have you got triple buffering enabled, I rem that used to smooth opengl for me a lot.

I just read in Nv forums and here other people having sputtering during gameplay.
Maybe is the way the G80 works, when the ROP and the shader goes by the hand.
Sputtering seem to be geometrical related, other people had trouble even at 1280x1024.
But really for the money you pay is not good.
Probably you will see the real performance on Vista.
The R600 in beta testing had trouble too on DX9.

GEOMETRY RELATED!!!!

So true, the cause of all genuine stutter problems....

FarCry and Oblivion both do it on my 8800GTX....

lots of angles and it just don't strafe properly....frame rate still says well about 60.

Oblivion runs perfectly on my 8800GTX, it's just CoD 1.

It may well be geometry related, but seeing as how some have the problem and some don't, I'm guessing there's some other contributing factor.

By the way, the tip on "Max frames to render ahead" does smooth out CoD a bit, but it also kills a few modern DX9 games at launch with a BSOD.
