just a thread for any bugs and known fixes. after 4 days of activision being as useful as a chocolate fireguard, I set about trying to fix my own issue myself.

Problem: Multi player freezes / hangs / locks up when launched

Solution:-

The non start multiplayer issue with modern warfare 2 seems to be with users who have steam pre installed for other titles before they installed the game. To fix this I had to uninstall MW2 and remove all other steam associated titles (believe me I tried every which way till Sunday before I did this, I have allot of steam titles), then uninstall steam itself.

a manual search of the users/"profile name"/appdata/local revealed no traces of the steam system. I then rebooted the system and reinstalled steam from the MW2 DVD as part of the game install. During this steam will download a bunch of updated content that is not otherwise available when using the pre installed steam client or a downloaded steam MSI package. It must be a fair amount as im on a ten mb cable line and my netspeed software was showing 800kb a second for almost 15 minutes.

Once Steam has done its thing, I continued the Install of the game and all is well.

To me though this is just another reason why steam was a bad bad choice for this game.

I get this bug but sod that !

I've had the same steam install since I first installed it about 6 years ago and that's not changing :D..

A few alt-tabs normally fixes it.

your lucky then, i could do nothing. Activision were totally useless, 3 different guys over three days telling me to do the same things as the last guy, which were all the things I had done myself anyway. yesterday I got fed up because i would have to wait till monday for the phones to open again so I got up early and started tinkering.

I've got a freezing bug, sometimes screwed up gfx, but in single player. Bringing up task manager & just exiting it returns me to the game. No other gaming issues (well except Far Cry 2) & no other steam games installed.

Neverwhere, I have the same problem as you and I've tried many different things (Including your solution of reinstalling steam from the game)

And it still doesn't work! :(

Anyone got any other solutions?

Cheers for any help

Any lockups, freezes, crashes, poor performance. Solution; Remove overclock, possibly underclock.

poor performance, solution: underclock your PC

If games are crashing like that then it looks like the overclock wasn't stable to begin with

I think it was in the 'official' thread but at least a couple of people agreed with me on this. My Q9550 has been rock solid at 3.4 since January give or take in every game i've thrown at it, had to drop it to 2.7 to get a solid frame rate and no crashes/freezes in MW2.

Mine crashes and I'm not even overclocked, lol.

One bug that is annoying me is the invisibility of certain body parts, my guns, etc. that occurs every now and then, usually with a change in terrain i.e. going outside to in and vice versa, but can happen whenever it feels like really, lol.

I suppose its just the way games vary in the way they stress your system.

I've got an i7 at 4ghz and the game aint crashed once. I think theres more to it than an OC tbh.

If your game crashes evertime on the loading screen run it in safe mode when asked. Then when its at the multiplayer splash screen quit the game before changing any resolution settings. The next time you start the game it should not ask about safe mode and load normally. This fixed the majority of crashes for me, but I still get a full system crash every 20th game or so, something to do with ventrilo i think.

May as well post in here too.

When playing SP or MP the game periodically minimizes to the desktop and nothing I try fixes it....?

I've tried running in safe mode also but still nothing

I've even tried all of the Activision and Steam suggestions (disabling all services and start up programmes etc)

Single player works fine and everything, even Co-op online, so I doubt it's anything to do with anti-virus things (although I have tried disabling them too)

I'm considering emailing steam and asking if there's anything they could do about it but I doubt they'd say anything different than what I've already read :/

One thing to try that seemed to solve my issues:

1. Copy steamapps folder to somewhere else on your HDD
2. Delete Your steam install
3. Reinstall Steam
4. Copy the steamapps folder back

This will reinstall steam but will avoid you having to re-download/install all of your games

Hope this helps

Further to my other thread, has anyone on this thread tried using Steam to verify the game files?

Right click on game, properties, local files, verify local files?
