I'm think about going camping in the not too distant future but I don't have any camping equipment. So, I'm after some tent, hiking boot, hunting knife, flint/fire lighter, etc., recommendations. It doesn't have to be top of the range, just good enough for the job.

Also, any suggestions on good places to camp in the South/South East of England (I'm currently living in Croydon)? I'm not really looking for camp sites with running water and toilet facilities. The current plan is to do this Ray Mears style, survive off the land for about a week.

So you want to go from nothing to Ray Mears in one step?
Well I'll be taking some food and water with me, along with a mobile phone, and I don't plan on staying more than a few miles from some form of civilisation, just in case it's too much for me to handle. But I want to try to do it without being dependant on twentieth century plumbing, running hot and cold water, showers and modern toilets.

I might fail miserably but at least I will have given it a go.

You just cant wild camp in England
This.

Campsites in England are sleepy places even in summer, this time of year they'll be closed or empty. Unless you’re very friendly with someone with a large piece of land it's a non starter. Remember most land owners don't want campers "surviving of the land" for good reason e.g. rubbish, human waste, fire, damage to property, disturbing local wildlife and live stock.

You'll have more joy camping up here in Scotland.

Of course then there's the problem of being in Scotland!

To an effort to be a little more use... ;)

It's going to be cold and damp now until May. Sleeping on the floor sucks the heat out of you like nothing else.

Please try this overnight in a garden 1st.

Sleeping bags are rated poorly. A bag rated to 0c will be far to cold at night now. It will sustain life at 0c but nothing else. You will wake (if you could sleep) feeling ####.

Also what are you going to eat Ray style in winter? Rowan berries are not my choice of fine dining :)

Try again in summer. :)
