Hi!

Does anyone know the cambelt change interval for an MG ZR 1.8 120+?

The car is a 52 plate and it's done just over 40,000 miles

Many thanks

On my 214, it was 60,000 miles I think.

Mine was on 83,000 miles and had the original belt fitted

I'd get it changed pretty soon if I was you. It'll be good for another 50,000 miles... by which time you will have probably sold the car.

Thanks for the reply

I did hear 40k from somewhere but the local (ex) Rover dealer near my parents said 60k IIRC. Not sure really - if it goes it's a new engine though!

It'll be expensive though, that's the main problem. I'm thinking something like £300 for the cambelt and tensioners, plus £100 for the water pump (if it needs doing - it did on my Astra at this age) plus whatever extra for the coolant change (if I should do it at this time). Do you think those prices are realistic?

I'm trying to remember what I paid for mine to be done.

I had the water pump and PS/alty belts changed at the same time.

I supplied all the parts and was charged around £120 labour I think. This was at a small garage. I didn't have the tensioners replaced. On a 40,000 mile engine I don't think you'll need the water pump/tensioners doing either.

On both of my 214's, the water pump held out until 80,000 miles before it started to leak.

Thanks - that sounds pretty reasonable

My Astra needed a new water pump at 40k, hence the question. It would be nice if it didn't need replacing though as it'll save a bit of money!

40k for a water pump? What was the cambelt interval for the Astra?

I'd be very suprised if a water pump needed replacing after 40k.

Have you seen the ones the K-series use? Big chunky metal things (with metal blades - :p mondeo owners)

Nope - haven't looked for mine yet!

The Astra needed a fair bit of work for 40k really - the cambelt interval was 40k on the Astra. It also had a fair few rattles too - my MG is rattle free

Your astra needed a new water pump because Vauxhall used the Water pump to tension the cambelt. After 40k miles the waterpump is nicely coroded into its housing....
