Cambridge Analytica

They'll just rebrand with another name for the next election.

And the new company doesn't have the issue of having investigators wanting access to records etc...

The old company on the other hand, well they're insolvent, who knows what will happen to all there stuff...

According to public filings at Britain's Companies House, Emerdata was incorporated in August 2017 and the Mercers were appointed to its board on March 16 this year.

meanwhile - Mr Don't do evil are updating T&C's via a plain english email

......
This month, we’re updating our Privacy Policy to make it easier for you to understand what information we collect and why we collect it. We’ve also taken steps to improve our Privacy Checkup and other controls we provide to safeguard your data and protect your privacy.
Nothing is changing about your current settings or how your information is processed. Rather, we’ve improved the way we describe our practices and how we explain the options you have to update, manage, export, and delete your data.
We’re making these updates as new data protection regulations come into effect in the European Union, and we’re taking the opportunity to make improvements for Google users around the world......

how do they get away with these euphemisms

I am assuming this is to conform with the
General Data Protection Regulation
coming into force 25 May , why don't they say so ?
... warm cuddly google

They did... like 4 lines down?

And euphemisms? Its a business that has their "customers" as their product, they kinda have no choice but to treat them like cattle.

yes you are right - but they dress up the announcement as their generous humanitarian gesture to their customers -
as opposed to getting to the meat and saying if you want your data do this.

a google search (irony) came up with a guardian article
https://www.theguardian.com/comment...l-the-data-facebook-google-has-on-you-privacy

....
The data Google has on you can fill millions of Word documents
Google offers an option to download all of the data it stores about you. I’ve requested to download it and the file is 5.5GB big
etc.

At least that will clear up any lingering questions about Facebook's trustworthiness.

LOL, probably because of the dodgy performance mark gave at the senate hearing, he needs someone who's better than him at talking bull. Makes total sense as he is the head of the "communications team" hahaha. So now you know any future communiqué from this company is just going to be complete bull.

Facebook outage hits 14 hours, longest in history- have they been hacked ?

This would be poetic justice, but it would not be in the Russian/fancy-bears interest ... I'd crowd fund it.
my broadband did seem to be more responsive last night

Also interesting
Zuckerberg’s new privacy essay shows why Facebook needs to be broken up
“Frankly we don’t currently have a strong reputation for building privacy protective services,” Zuckerberg writes. But Facebook’s reputation is not the salient question: its business model is. If Facebook were to implement strong privacy protections across the board, it would have little left to sell to advertisers aside from the sheer size of its audience. Facebook might still make a lot of money, but they’d make a lot less of it.

Suggestion in the news yesterday that, like email readers, wher you can plug and play,
social media apps should just be front-end, with your data just stored/exchanged using a standard API .. so break up the monopolization

This is how it should be done. But Facebook and Google would fight to their last breath to stop it. Anyone else seeing an endless flood of ads for "Grammerly"? It's the majority of ads that I see online now. Not even the most common but the literal majority. I wondered why until yesterday when I finally realised their business model. It's a key logger.

What do you mean by this? Beyond the fact that data you type is sent to them?

Why do you think I mean anything beyond that? That is sufficient. Grammarly is a key logger. It records what you type and sends that off to Grammarly HQ where according to the terms of their licence they have an irrevocable right to keep it, look at it, use it in various ways, share it with law enforcement... and of course data mining. They even have a question in their FAQ reading "Q. Is Grammarly a key logger? A. No, a key logger is used by criminals (paraphrased)." It's a key logger. That's why they have a free browser extension. You install it, they get everything you type in your browser. (And elsewhere with the desktop version).

conspiracy theories

I'm going to go out on a limb and predict Facebook/Instagram was compromised today and hasn't let us know it yet.
renderTimingPixel.png

Facebook, Facebook messenger, WhatsApp, Instagram have all been having similar connectivity issues and I assume the reason why is they have been compromised on a level they never experienced before. I say this because they (Claim) - they literally have no idea what is wrong which to me would suggest someones * them pretty hard right now which means millions of ppls private information is going to be gathered. They are trying to save face but the fact of the matter is these problems don't last this long on so many servers unless there is something catastrophic happening or has happened.

Considering the current outrage at Zuck* and his new changes to privacy policy he wants to or already has implemented I can see that ******* off people off maybe someone that is into hacking * maybe groups of people into hacking got ****** off and decided to pwn facebook.

Anyone hearing about anything like this out there?

Edit: I'll just throw this in here too because I didn't even think of this when I wrote it but /u/macpepper pointed out they might be cleaning up evidence of crimes committed suggested in /u/metaphorical_oracle's commented link "Facebook’s Data Deals Are Under Criminal Investigation" I cant imagine destroying servers data is easy to do AND keep your company's online products afloat.

Now we got two good theories going this is why I love this sub!

One where Facebooks the victim and one where they are the villain...

  • but lets be honest no matter what they're always going to be the villain lol.

I don't know why people who are concerned about the actions of companies like Facebook don't just stop using the service. It really is that easy, just uninstall the apps and get on with it. Facebook gets portrayed at times as if it's an essential service like electricity and water.

I've been telling people that for years! Yet i still see people uploading 783 snaps from their recent holiday on there. It just baffles me.

Even though I never did fb, like smoking (naziism?), it adversely impacts society/children, so a degree of evangilism is needed to stop the pandemic.
How do you orchestrate a call to arms without a hashtag ...
maybe a vigilante has decided to take them out though, the keyboard is mightier than the sword.

I don't use if for that reason. But I can tell you there's a high cost to that when so many of your friends use it for keeping in touch and planning social activities. Not using it isolates you. Perhaps in your generation or demographic that's not the case so you don't feel it or care. But for many of us it's a significant issue.
