After a recent rebuild I have decided to replace from trusty dell desktop speakers and am thinking of going with some Cambridge Audio Speakers and amp.

Is Cambridge Audio gear any good?

Thinking of the A5 amp and S30 bookshelf speakers.

Also is it true about new audio gear requiring time to 'bed in'?

I have a Azur 540R, no complaints here, well built and good value

Its rather good overall however the company that owns "Richer S....." also owns Cambridge (well certainly used to) and with the amount of advertising this company does with certain "WHAT" magazines they tend to usually get good sized and well rounded reviews on most products.

Not that im saying a company that gives a constant advertising campain to a publisher of several AV mags would in any way be priviledged to offer a more substantial or favourable review of such products...

You want real opinions in real world circumstances use forums like this and form your own assumption from all the views of people posted. I used to get suckered into reviews in my early AV days as im sure many people did before the internet was available.

Some of the higher end stuff is being received extremely well on places like Hifi Wigwam and Pink Fish. The 640P phone stage, 640/840C CDPs and the 840A have all being highly praised.

there stuff is good for the money but ive not heard any cambridge audio speakers i think they just started doing speakers recently

Not heard about CA speakers before either, so personally I'd give them a miss and get some really nice ones second hand off ebay. The A5 is fine though, providing you get one that works, me and a mate hit a bad batch from the same RS store, and both had to replace ours, mine once, his twice, whereupon RS gave him an upgrade free of charge to say sorry.

You'd really be better listening to a CA A5 amp, to make sure you like the sound they produce, and then test them with several speakers to give you an idea of how different speakers play with the amp, some of the Richer Sounds should give you the option to demo the amp at least. For the price though, the A5 is pretty decent. Not amazing, but its a fair bit better than the Sony micro hi-fi I have that cost almost twice as much as my current setup cost me :) Tbh, Im thinking of taking out the sony, and sticking it elsewhere in the house, selling it, or using it as a sound system for my consoles, because its doing virtually nothing right now, as I listen to my x-fi/a5/mission751 combo so so much more.

I couldn't find anything on the speakers either.

Thanks for the help, might steer away from the s30 speaks now.

IMO check out NADC320BEE and Arcam Alpha 7 or higher prices on ebay, look at some mission 70 and 75 series speakers.

Just an example of what you could get for comparatively little 2nd hand, and would be a much better buy IMO... if you're willing to go 2nd hand of course.
