Can a ATI 5970 run 3D games?

Yeah you can, you can use one of 2 pieces of software, one is called "iz3d" and the other is "tridef". There's a limited amount of monitors and glasses you can use it with though.

AMD HD3D In 60 Seconds

AMD's HD3D differs from NVIDIA's in that AMD only supply the GPU. NVIDIA have a bundled solution, providing their drivers and stereoscopic glasses, with pre-HDMI 1.4a displays using a proprietary DVI connection. Now that HDMI 1.4a is here, AMD users pick from IZ3D or DDD TripleDef driver, and pick a HDMI 1.4a panel & compatible glasses.

You see many more nvidia monitors and kits etc. You can use iz3d on nvidia cards aswell making them better supported.

NV don't make monitors & neither are the monitors exclusive to NV 3D use & there is only one NV kit.
AMDs 3D can be used with a greater variety of 3D Glasses as its not Proprietary & locked to one kit like NV.
The most important part about 3D gaming is the drivers support as it doesn't matter where or who you buy your TV & glasses from if the drivers have no support for a particular game you want to play.
